What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
It is getting extremely hard to find a real martial arts school nowadays. Be aware of so called martial arts experts and high rank self-proclaimed masters, who offer quick and fun training experience. The Martial Way is not a sport, hobby or casual pastime, Martial Arts are not games. It is very easy to fall a victim of sneaky marketing tactics in today's world of greed, personal pride and "over the weekend licensing courses". Educate yourself, ask right questions before you make a decision.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Main question would be, what are the reasons behind student's desire to start martial arts? Is it self defense, to build confidence, get into shape, make friends or maybe competition? Those questions will help you to find a right school. Before choosing a martial arts school, everyone should also educate themselves about the differences between genuine arts and commercialism. Martial arts have been widely misinterpreted by many, including mass media who presents a pseudo arts far from the real thing. Those do offer some benefits, but will build a false sense of security. It is a known fact that traditional approach brings genuine and realistic results.
