    Frequently asked questions

My typical process for working with a new student would involve the following steps:

    1) Initial assessment: I would start by assessing the student's physical condition and any previous experience or training they may have in martial arts or similar activities.

    2) Building a foundation: I would then focus on building a strong foundation for the student by teaching them the basic movements, postures, and breathing techniques of Systema.

    3) Gradual progression: As the student becomes more comfortable with the basics, I would gradually introduce more complex techniques and exercises, always making sure to adapt to the student's individual needs and abilities.

    4) Constant feedback: I would provide constant feedback and guidance to the student, helping them to understand and correct any mistakes they may be making.

    5) Incorporating sparring: As the student progresses, I would incorporate sparring into the training, allowing them to apply the techniques they have learned in a live setting.

    6) Regular check-ins: I would have regular check-ins with the student to discuss their progress and any areas they may be struggling with, and adjust the training accordingly.

    7) Emphasize on safety: Safety is always the top priority, and I would make sure that the student understands how to practice techniques and exercises safely, and to avoid injury.

As a fully Certified Systema instructor, I have undergone extensive education and training in the Systema martial art. This includes:

    2) Certified Instructor: I have been certified by a recognized Systema organization or Master Instructor to teach Systema. I have attained the status of a Fully Certified Systema Instructor, a distinction held by only 98 individuals worldwide.

    3) Continued education: I continue to participate in workshops, online classes and seminars to stay current on the latest techniques and training methods and to improve my own skills.

    4) First aid and safety training: I have received first aid and safety training to ensure the safety of all my students during training.

I do have a standard pricing system for my lessons. The fees may vary depending on the location, type of lesson and the package deal offered. However, I am willing to work with each student to come up with a pricing plan that works for their budget and schedule.

For example, I may offer a package deal for a certain number of lessons at a discounted rate, or offer a reduced rate for students who commit to a certain number of lessons per week. I also offer private sessions, group sessions and online sessions which the prices may vary as well.

It's always best to contact me directly to discuss pricing options and to see if there are any current promotions or discounts available. I am open to negotiation and willing to find a suitable pricing plan that works for both of us.

I got started teaching Systema after many years of dedicated training and practice in the discipline. After receiving my Instructor-in-Training Certification, I began by assisting experienced instructors in their classes and workshops, gradually taking on more responsibility and leading my own training sessions. I also sought out and received my Fully Certified Instructor Certification from Systema HQ in Toronto, which helped to establish my credibility as an instructor. Over time, I built a reputation as a skilled and knowledgeable teacher and began to develop my own training programs and curriculum.

I have had the pleasure of working with a diverse group of students. I have worked with:

    1) People of all ages: I have taught students ranging from young adults to seniors.

    2) People of all fitness levels: I have worked with students who are just starting their fitness journey as well as those who are highly advanced and experienced athletes.

    3) People from various professions: I have taught students from different professions such as law enforcement, military, health professionals, and more.

    4) People with different goals: Some students come to me looking to improve their physical fitness, while others are interested in learning self-defense techniques. Some students come to me to improve their flexibility and balance, while others are looking for a new hobby or a way to de-stress.

    5) People with different backgrounds: I have taught students from various cultural backgrounds, and with different levels of previous martial arts training or experience.

    6) People with different needs: I have also worked with students with different needs, such as those recovering from injuries or with disabilities, and adapt the training to meet their needs.

Overall, I believe that Systema is a discipline that is adaptable to anyone, and I enjoy the challenge of working with students from different backgrounds and with different goals.

As a Systema instructor, I recently taught a group class that I am particularly fond of. The class consisted of students of varying skill levels and backgrounds, but they all brought a great energy and enthusiasm to the training space.

During the class, we worked on developing our breathing and relaxation techniques, which are key principles in Systema. We started with simple exercises to help students become more aware of their breath and how it affects their movement and state of mind. As the class progressed, we moved on to more dynamic movements that incorporated these breathing techniques.

I was impressed by the students' ability to quickly pick up on the principles we were working on and apply them to their movements. It was inspiring to see the progress they made throughout the class and the increased confidence they gained in their abilities.

One of the highlights of the class was a group exercise where students had to work together to defend against a simulated attacker. This was a great opportunity for them to put their skills into practice and see how they could use their breathing and relaxation techniques in a high-pressure situation. The teamwork and communication displayed by the students were truly impressive, and it was a testament to the progress they had made in their training.

Overall, this recent group class was a great reminder of why I love teaching Systema and working with students to help them develop their skills and confidence.

I would advise any student looking to hire a teacher in my area of expertise to keep the following in mind:

    1) Look for a qualified instructor: Make sure that the instructor you are considering is Certified and has undergone comprehensive training in Systema. This will ensure that they have the knowledge and skills to teach you safely and effectively.

    2) Check their experience: Experience is a key factor in being a good instructor, look for an instructor who has been teaching for a while and who has a good reputation. They should be able to provide references or testimonials from previous students.

    3) Observe a class: Observe a class that the instructor is teaching and see if they are able to effectively communicate the techniques and principles of Systema and how they handle different students' needs.

    4) Make sure they have a clear teaching style: Everyone has their own teaching style, make sure that you find an instructor whose style is compatible with your learning style.

    5) Safety should be a priority: Safety should always be the top priority when practicing Systema, make sure the instructor emphasizes safety and encourages students to practice at their own level.

    6) Look for a good fit: Look for an instructor who is a good fit for you, with whom you feel comfortable, and who is willing to work with you to achieve your goals.

    7) Cost and schedule: Consider the cost and schedule of the lessons, and make sure it fits your budget and availability.

In summary, hiring a qualified and experienced Systema Instructor is important, as well as finding a good fit that suits your needs. Observe a class, check references, and make sure safety is a priority. The most important thing is to find an instructor who can help you achieve your goals and with whom you feel comfortable learning.

I would advise students to think through the following questions before talking to teachers about their needs:

    1) What are your goals? It is important to have a clear understanding of what you hope to achieve through your training. Are you looking to improve your physical fitness, learn self-defense techniques, or simply de-stress?

    2) What is your current fitness level? Are you a beginner or do you have previous experience in martial arts or similar activities? Knowing your current fitness level will help the instructor understand how to best adapt the training to your needs.

    3) What are your availability and schedule? It is important to consider your availability and schedule when looking for an instructor. Make sure to discuss the days and times of the classes to ensure they fit with your schedule.

    4) What is your budget? Consider the cost of the classes and make sure it fits your budget. Some instructors offer package deals or discounts for multiple classes.

    5) What are your expectations? Discuss your expectations with the instructor, so they have a clear understanding of what you hope to achieve.

    6) What is your learning style? Everyone has their own learning style, some people prefer visual, others prefer hands-on. It's important to find an instructor whose teaching style is compatible with your learning style.

    7) What are your safety concerns? Safety should always be a top priority when practicing Systema, discuss any concerns you may have with the instructor and make sure they understand how to accommodate them.

    8) What are you looking for in an instructor? Are you looking for someone who is more hands-on, someone who is more patient or someone who is more strict? Knowing what you are looking for in an instructor will help you find the right one for you.

By thinking through these questions, students will be better prepared to have a productive conversation with their potential instructor, and will be more likely to find an instructor who can meet their specific needs and help them achieve their goals.
