Communication is very important in teaching anything. Golf can be very complicated if not thaught properly. Keeping it simple is the key while having fun.  Being that I've participated in multiple sports I understand motion/range of motion. Everyone has thier own range of motion and I'm very good at identifying it which is key.

Golf Made Simple.

Golf Made Simple.

History: Member of the PGA of America since 1982. National Senior Club Professional Champion 1996. Lesson Philosophy: Most swing faults are the product of poor set-ups and balance. Putting the golfer in a better posture and balance will sometimes eliminate those faults. I stress the basics: grip, aim and posture. For the player whose skills are advanced, the stress is on the mental approach to the game.

I worked at Pasadena Yacht and Golf Club for 5 years teaching children from 4 years old and up. For older more experienced players I do not mind 9 hole playing lessons while video taping swing or video on range lesson also. Good putting is a must so putting lessons are also available.

Golf Instruction That’s Good for the Soul

Mike Riso · Clearwater, FL

Golf professional, Michael Riso has been helping students learn to love the game of golf for over 28 years. He’s one of the teaching professionals at Clearwater Country Club, in Clearwater, Florida.

Michael spent most of his first 40 years living in Buffalo, New York. He owned and operated Swing In Time Golf Shop from 1989 to 1998. After 10 years operating Swing in Time, Michael relocated to the West Coast of Florida, taking with him his expertise in golf, and love of the game.

His current company, Mike Riso Golf, is located by beautiful Clearwater Beach. The company focuses on Professional Golf Instruction, Business Golf training programs, teaching golfers how to relax and reduce stress, and also teaches people how to live healthier lives. His intuitive teaching approach facilitates rapid learning, lasting improvement and greater enjoyment golfing!

In 2003, Michael and his wife Nancy started Relax and Golf by combining their passions for golf and yoga.

The ‘Relax’ aspect of the company, emanates from Nancy’s background in yoga and meditation. Using golf-specific stretches, derived from yoga, Mike is able to help golfers reach a level of flexibility that enhances their body to hit better shots, and also aids their physical well-being at the same time.

By combining golf swing tension release techniques with stretches, players quickly relax, creating the opportunity for better shots, lower scores, and more enjoyment golfing.

Nancy’s formal education in Naturopathic medicine, helped her discover the life enhancing benefits of a holistic lifestyle, a vegetarian diet based on living foods, and energy psychology. Michael passes along these benefits to his students who want more than just a great golf game.

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

My deep love of the game, and the challenges of getting that little ball into a small hole, were the real catalysts in becoming a professional golf teacher. As I continued to teach, it was the sheer joy of watching golfers improve and enjoy golfing that has kept me a teacher for nearly 30 years.

Tell us about your passion for teaching?

To say I’m passionate about teaching would be a huge understatement. I love watching students ‘Understand, apply, and get excited about information I share with them, at the learning level they’re at!’

Here are a few examples: A 6-year-old hits the ball 20 yards for the first time. A four-year-old makes a 1-foot putt. A 45-year-old woman hits a 60 yard drive straight down the middle for the first time. A 4-handicap golfer decreases his hook by 3 yards. A novice finally breaks 100. A player shooting in the 80’s finally shoots in the 70’s.

It’s remarkably gratifying to make one subtle grip change for a student in a few minutes, and watch 20 years of slicing the ball, and the frustration that went with it- disappear!

What do you love most about your job?

Most golfers come to their lesson unsure of what to work on. They don’t know what to focus on, and what information is unimportant to improving. I love simplifying and clarifying the core principles for people in a way that is customized to them.

I feel my ability to teach from a completely intuitive place creates a level of receptivity with my students that wouldn’t be available if I only taught the fundamentals from mind to mind. People need to feel the changes if they are going to retain and apply the information long-term.

What types of students have you worked with?

I’ve worked with golfers who are 4 years old, to golfers in their late 80’s, and every personality type imaginable. The students with the fewest questions tend to learn more rapidly, because we don’t have the mind interfering. The trust factor is extremely important in moving students ahead more quickly.

What was your most memorable golf lesson, and why?

A woman in her mid-twenties who was just starting golf, came into my golf shop looking for clubs. I began giving her some light instruction as I prepared for her club fitting. I positioned her so she was bent slightly more forward at the waist when she addressed the ball. Within a few seconds she stood up almost straight, so once again I repositioned her so she was in correct posture. For the second time she stood straight up again before ever swinging the club. I patiently repositioned her for a third time, and once again a few seconds later she stood almost straight up.

I gently asked her: “Why do you keep standing up, when I place you in proper posture before you swing.” She hesitated a few seconds then meekly said: “Because I think I look ridiculous.” She felt as if she was bent forward an extreme amount, and didn’t want to look foolish.

That was the first of hundreds of women I’ve taught with the same misperception. It became by far the most valuable lesson I’ve ever given, since we can now address this concern without wasting valuable lesson time.

What advice would you give aspiring students?

Find a golf teacher you connect with. How they communicate is as important as what they teach you.

Learn the basics before anything else. The core of a consistent swing is: Correct posture, Grip, Alignment, Swingpath, Proper Weight Shift, and Timing.

  • Ask your teacher to supply testimonials, so you can see how students feel about their lessons.
  • Have fun during your lessons, and when you play on the course.
  • Always try to feel the changes you’re learning, instead of trying to think about them.
  • Play with golfers whose company you enjoy being around.

Lastly, enjoy being in nature, feeling the wind and the sun, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate that you’re playing possibly the greatest, most satisfying game ever invented.
