Chords and reading tab, strumming and minor pentatonic scales if they want to play lead and they are complete beginners. I observe their playing and get what they think their weak points are, and coordinate what I'm going to teach them based on their goals. In other words I determine where they are and where they want to get and work out an effecient way to get them there.A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:
If the student has never played I teach basic open position chords in a certain order that goes from easier to harder and how to strum. I then teach them some songs (that they have heard before and like). If they already play I ask them what difficulties or questions they have, observe their playing and fill in the missing gaps. This is how I also teach an advanced or pro layer. The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:
Anyone who really wants to learn (not just the guitar, but how music works).
