About this pro

Hello! My name is Mark Shian and I'm a musician, artist, and teacher from St. Petersburg, FL.

I teach lessons from beginner to advanced for electric / acoustic guitar and piano.

My main areas of focus are on developing your technical ability to play your instrument as well as improvisation. I will make sure you understand foundational music theory, understand chord and scale construction, learn all your notes, etc. but the primary focus will be to make you a better more dynamic guitar and piano player.

I also teach studio recording, mixing and mastering, for those interested in starting their own recording studio. I have 10+ years playing live and recording albums.

My website is

Check out my music and videos as well as my biography. I look forward to working with you to help you acheive your playing goals.

I love being able to share and impart my years of knowledge and experience to students that are passionate about improving in their instrument. I strive to take my student's playing ability moving forward as quickly as possible and develop their ability to improvise and play their favorite songs. I also give all my students a strong foundation in their understanding of theory principles which will help them be more confident in their ability in the long run.

Mark is an absolute genius instructor. I picked up playing about 8 months ago and begun working with Mark. My improve has gone through the stratosphere! He lays things out in a visual, intuitive, easy to understand way. It just makes sense. Thanks Mark

Mark is extremely versed in the field of music. He teaches with a very easy style that "sticks". I am coming away with an understanding of issues that previously confused me. It's like my eyes are seeing for the first time. He analyzes your talent level, and comes up with a specific plan for the individual student. It is exciting, and I "want' to put the work in, to make myself better with his guidance. If your not taking lessons from Mark, are truly missing out on something very special. What a hidden gem, right here in St Petersburg, Thanks to Lessons .com I was able to find him!

I just started working with mark. He's very knowledgeable, professional, well organized. He was able to guide me on our very first lesson towards clarifying blocks I've had for years as a musician. I highly recommend him to any new or experienced musician looking to advance their playing skills!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I usually start off with an evaluation lesson to determine where the student is at in their playing ability. I then tailor a custom program to get the student going on the right path to improving their playing.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have been a studio and recording musician for 10+ years and have years of experience playing on stage for the worship arena. I'm also a recording engineeer and have released my own albums which can be heard on itunes, google play, etc. I am also an online instructor and I have taught hundreds of students from all over the world through my online courses.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

My rate is $40 per hour.

How did you get started teaching?

I began teaching when people began approaching me after my stage shows asking me to help them with their playing. After getting enough requests I decided that I was going to expand my career by sharing all my knowledge and experience with the world and give back after years of being poured into by other professionals.

What types of students have you worked with?

I work with students from all walks of life, young and old. Beginner to advanced.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

The recording and filming of my music video "Still My Everything" which was produced with the Philharmonia of Kansas City Orchestra.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

I would first make sure he has an online profile and that he is a great musician that inspires you. Music is difficult and if you learn from someone who's boring or not as inspiring you won't really progress. Find someone who inspires you and that knows how to impart that knowledge in a way that's easy to understand. Also make sure the teacher has passion for teaching as this makes a huge difference!

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Definitely ask about what specific genre they're looking to learn and if the teacher can accomodate. As well as long term learning plan.
