About

My teaching approach:

My teaching style is similar to that taught by the Mel Bay books...simple, organized and easy to understand. For beginners, I haven't seen a better teaching system. For more advanced players, I focus on their taste in playing as well as players or bands they enjoy. I try to expand my students interests as well as work with and encourage their particular tastes and interests. I've been playing guitar for 34 years. I have 3 years performance experience and ten years teaching experience. My gear includes Ibanez guitars, Marshall amp and speakers and Line 6 and Ibanez effect pedals.

My influences are:

My early influences were Ritchie Blackmore who played for Deep Purple and Rainbow. He used unusual scales for his soloing and I liked it. I became a Rush fan later on and learned whole albums of their material. Their guitarist, Alex Lifeson, created wonderfully melodic chord arrangements. When I became more advanced, I learned Joe Satriani's material and became a huge fan.

My guitar lessons take place in:

The teacher's studio or the student's home.

Guitar Techniques:

Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Open tuning, Fingerstyle, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Recording and Production, Guidance In Equipment Selection

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

For a beginner, I introduce the student to the guitar itself...it's parts and how it works. I teach simple picking on the first few strings and combine some of those notes to form simple partial chords. I do all I can to show how easy it will be to learn. The student needs some hope that they can actually get good at playing. For more advanced players, I compare their playing to my own and offer lessons geared to push their abilities.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

First, it will be fun. No one continues doing what they don't enjoy. Both beginner and intermediate players will go over the previous lesson and practice. Lessons include exercises designed to build strength and stamina emphasizing proper technique. Students will learn chords and scales so they can enjoy actually playing songs...and the student will have input as to the songs they learn. I will also teach tablature. I am structured but flexible.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

An ideal student is one with a good attitude and a desire to learn and work. By far, a student's advancement in becoming a good guitar player happens from his or her practicing. A lesson offers the information but growth comes from playing...the more often the better. So, the good student is one who practices what they're taught and is ready for the next lesson.
