About this pro

I can teach you guitar and piano and also how to use protools to record your own original music. I have taught people interested in songwriting how to develop and hone their skills.

I have over 20 years of experience writing songs and have released several albums. I have had 2 songs used in the t.v. show Gossip Girl.

I love music and love teaching and sharing what I have learned over the years and feel that I'm really good at it. I have plenty of references from people that will happily tell you the great experiences they've had with me as their teacher (or parents that have had me teaching their child).

Reach out and let's start working on your own personal music adventure!

I love helping people of all ages discover making music for the first time, or if they are already experienced, helping them continue to develop their skills.

The most important part is having fun and unlocking their passion for music!

My son is pretty creative and artistic so when he expressed interest in guitar I was not surprised. After teaching himself somethings on Youtube, my fiancée and I decided to get him lessons and we were lucky enough to hire Ian. We started with 30 minute lessons and our kid has thrived under Ian’s tutelage. Ian is such a natural teacher. He is so knowledgeable and skilled but his best attribute is his patience with understanding your kids skill set and adjusting to them. I have sat in on lessons and Ian was so intuitive with what my son needed during the lesson, he never got off track which is amazing because he can loses focus pretty easily. Our son progressed at such a rapid rate that we moved up the lessons to an hour. It is now my child's favorite part of the weekend and he practices on his own because he loves his new creative outlet. That does not happen if Ian was not cultivating that in my kid. Hire Ian if you want to see your child open up creatively, he is fantastic!

Mr. Ian combined music theory and songwriting together that made music incredibly fun! I started piano with him and quickly learned the fundamentals as well as improvisations. His lessons are equal parts technical skill/theory and creative musical time. He also completely lets the student dictate where the creative direction goes; we got to compose things that came from my mind while he helped expand my musical knowledge and abilities. Overall an excellent teacher!

Ian is a great guitar teacher. He’s fun and makes the “boring parts” of learning guitar fun. He’s very nice and thoughtful, and if you’re struggling with a practice or a technique, he’ll go out of his way to make sure everything is ok. One again, he’s a great teacher and I recommend him to anyone who wants to learn guitar or piano. I look forward to every lesson with him. If I didn’t start getting lessons from him as soon as I did, I most likely would’ve stopped playing.

Ian has a very genuine quality as well as extreme passion for the music arts. Our son worked with Ian for several years, working on piano, guitar, trumpet, and even helped him record music. To this day, we credit much of our son's continued passion and talent for music to Ian's skills, patience, humor, and ability to bring the best out of budding musicians. Thanks for the hard work and musical inspiration!

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

It's different with guitar and piano. But the first lesson is getting to know each other and figuring out what you want to learn! It's up to you in some ways and I will help you to figure it out! Piano is a little more straightforward as we will most likely start with basic piano books.

Guitar can start several ways but will always include some basic finger and string exercises, quickly moving to basic chords and strumming and incorporating that into simplified versions of your favorite songs.

The possibilities are endless!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have played piano actively since I was 4.

I played French Horn from ages 8 to 21. I had a scholarship to Northern Illinois University for performance.

I sang in choir at Glenbard East High School and placed 3rd, 2nd, and 1st in my district in my sophomore, junior and senior years respectively.

After high school I wrote and recorded songs extensively and have performed with many bands and have even had 2 of my songs in a t.v. show called Gossip Girl.

I taught private lessons for a company called Allegeo Music and Dance Academy for several years. I taught mainly piano and guitar, and also some piano classes. I had up to 40 students a week.

And most importantly,  I love music and love teaching and sharing what I can with anyone and everyone!

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I charge $30 for a half hour.

I charge $50 for an hour.

How did you get started teaching?

I started teaching my neighbor's kids when I was 18 and I instantly realized i had a knack for it. And I've never stopped!

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with students from the age of 5 to the age of 65!

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I recently had the sister of a student thank me for helping her little brother find something that has helped him come out of his shell. She said he has never been excited about something and it makes her heart happy to see the way he lights up when he plays.

Well it made my heart just as happy to hear that :)

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Make sure you find the right fit! I of course want you to hire me! And I hope you try a lesson with me.

I've had countless incredible students over the years, but sometimes I've had students that worked better with other teachers.

Would never deprive a person of the best experience they can have, it's about you and your music, not me!

So make sure you find the best teacher and look around through these profiles and give a teacher a good chance, but never be afraid to try a different one!!
