About

Philip Anderson

Instructs: Guitar, Drums and Percussion

Philip has been playing drums for over twenty years and during that time has studied extensively through private instruction, as well as in groups in the genres of modern rock, jazz, world percussion, and orchestral. He has taught private lessons for more than twelve years including at the collegiate level in Swaziland, Africa focusing on hand drums and kit instruction. Philip has also done private instruction in Denver, Colorado where he worked for American Piano School music studios teaching drums, percussion, guitar, and bass. He and his wife, Kelli have traveled the world teaching, playing, and leading worship for churches in Africa, Southeast Asia, Fairbanks, Alaska and Tampa Florida. They now live and base in Rockford, Illinois where they are originally from and are launching a House of Prayer where music and intercession will take place 24 hours a day.

Things I enjoy about teaching: I love taking a student to a place where they really begin to understand the nuts and bolts of how music works! That's when it gets fun for them!

Favorite curriculum: I use alot of the old Charles Dowd books especially "A funky primer for the Rock Drummer" to help develop basic technique and dexterity. I also use Bobby Rock's "Encyclopedia of Groove" and always go over the 26 fundamental rudiments.

Special things I bring to the table as a teacher:

A special focus on teaching how to read notation and understanding music theory. (Things that are easy to neglect in drums and guitar but if not mastered create a much weaker musician)

I have taught students from ages 4 to 60 and that has really helped me to learn how to communicate concepts to a wide audience.

My passion is to see "House of David" musicians raised up that will be able to bring heaven to earth through their instruments.

Frequently asked questions

I’d like to do an initial free consultation with a student to assess where they’re at and talked about how we can work together to get them to their musical goals.

I have played and taught guitar and drums for more than 20 years in the private studio my wife and I founded as well as for a studio in Denver Colorado! I have also been involved with many bands in different musical styles over that time as well.

I charge $16 for weekly half hour private lessons. I also occasionally do group lessons or 8-12 week segments focused on a particular style or skill.

I have always loved music and got my start teaching while living in Southern Africa and working with students at a local college teaching them percussion.

I have worked with a wide variety of ages and skill levels from 5 year old beginners to older adults wanting to learn a new skill!
