Steve has been teaching our son piano for a few months now and we couldn’t be happier. The lessons are engaging and continue to reinforce and build proper skills. Steve is patient and responsive and incredibly knowledgeable. A wide variety of music is taught which allows our son exposure to different genres. We would highly recommend Steve for any skill level.

Steve is personable, and very knowledgeable about the guitar and my son enjoys working with him each week! He gives detailed feedback to allow us to know what materials will be needed as well as how the lessons went. Although my son is playing guitar for the first time, within two weeks he was already playing songs! I highly recommend Steve for lessons!

Steve is a teacher that makes my son truly learn. He evaluated his knowledge during first trial class, and knew exactly how to carry-on. Steve’s approach, it’s a great balance of making the student feel comfortable while challenging him to learn. Steve encourages my son to practice daily! By doing so, the effects of improvement are quick and obvious.

Steve has been a fellow teacher of mine for over a decade. Weve shared stories, compared notes (no pun intended), and talked about how awesome it is to be able to give our students all of the knowledge weve gained through thousands of hours of teaching experience and playing our instruments. Steve also has a professional sound setup for online teaching that makes remote learning easier for the student. I highly recommend Steve for piano, guitar, and/or drum lessons. Someone with that kind of versatility and education should not be passed up when searching for a teacher.

My son has a great student–teacher relationship. It takes the right teacher to help enjoy learning while challenging him to improve with each lesson and not to short any song. Steves live online sound has really impressed us.

I played an organ years ago ( I am 70 years old) and lost a lot of skills. I now have a digital piano, but I was not satisfied with my progress.
So I signed up for lessons with Steve. I took piano lessons from Steve for about 18 months. I moved about an hour away, so it was not practical to continue with him.
The lessons from Steve were exactly what I was looking for. He figured out my skill level and set up a plan for me. He stressed the fundamentals while teaching a song at the same time. Being able to play a song, even a simple one, was a great reward. Then we progressed to develop more skills and more interesting songs.
Steve is patient, attentive and a good coach. He genuinely loves teaching and finds that “spark” in to build on. I saw this many times as I would listen to him teaching the student before me.
Steve is a great teacher and I strongly recommend him.

    Frequently asked questions

My first process is assess what experience and capability the student has with their instrument.  The majority of lessons incorporate a method book as well as learning songs by real artists.

I majored in music at College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn, IL from 1999-2001, and I also attended Musician's Institute in Los Angeles, CA from 2001-2002. My training also includes studying privately with heavy metal icon Joe Nunez formerly of Soulfly, and drum philosopher Paul Wertico formerly of Pat Metheny.

I'm currently offering a free trial lesson and a discounted four lesson introductory package at $100 for new students only. This is saving you $75 including the free trial lesson. That's 5 thirty minute lessons for $100. If you don't think we're a good fit after the first trial lesson, there is no commitment to move forward with the introductory package.

Lessons are booked in monthly blocks. I adhere to a lesson policy regarding tuition, cancellations and makeups, and withdrawing from lessons. Lesson rates move to my normal rate after the introductory package.

I started teaching at Hix Bros Music in Aurora, IL in June of 2003.

I have worked with students ages 5 and above since 2003.

Most students that start with me are beginners,  although I have taught intermediate to advanced players as well.

My student was invited to meet Johnny Cash's drummer, W.S. Holland, in Nashville, TN just from posting a video of a song we were working on to their Facebook page. She also graced the stage with Chicago blues legend Buddy Guy and American Idol Contestant Kennedy Rickenhouse by 15 years of age.
