About

Based on the number of hires and five star reviews I’m grateful to again be the first choice for those seeking top notch guitar instruction in Indianapolis and surrounding communities for 2024.

In addition to lessons at my studio in Westfield, Indiana I offer instruction to my

clients in their homes. This is a niche service that my competitors for the most part don’t offer. There is no substitute for the personal interaction that occurs when sitting down with an instructor; that alone greatly increases a student’s chances of success.

From the helpful introductory call where I described myself and goals (old guy, love music, never learned, always wanted to, need engaging hobby…) and Mark described his approach, experience, and expectations (low-key, you’ll learn music and how to play, decades of playing and teaching, you’ll need to be humble enough to take directions) it has been a great fit. Mark guides and coaches, sets a plan and gives homework that ‘stretches’, and is encouraging. He’s very knowledgeable and skilled. And patient. Great educator for me, a 60+ yo professional w long-standing interest, no experience, and an interest to learn.

Mark has been wonderful. Our son is 7 so we weren’t sure if he’d be too young, but Mark has done a great job teaching to his level. I asked my son what he thought about his lessons… he said he thinks Mark is kind, explains it well, and is pretty cool. :) Highly recommend!

I am a senior citizen, and believe its never too late to learn new skills.
I was fortunate in finding Mark Avery on your website, and have been taking lessons from him for a couple of months now.
Mark is an excellent teacher. Ive always been able to strum a few chords, but Mark has me learning to read music and tackling jazz pieces I couldnt imagine trying previously. In addition to his extensive knowledge of the guitar, Mark is also very patient, which really helps. I highly recommend him…if he can work you in.

Im a 35-year-old healthcare professional who had never picked up a guitar in my life until 2.5 months ago - and now, with many thanks to Mark, I am playing melodies and chords and learning increasingly complex pieces! Mark is very patient and encouraging, but he does not hesitate to provide correction and steer away from bad habits where needed! I greatly appreciate his insistence on learning to read music, as it opens up so many possibilities to playing that I would not have had otherwise. His passion for the instrument and for music in general feeds my enthusiasm, and he is very open to my questions and further explorations of music theory, playing techniques, and songs I want to learn. So glad to have him as my teacher!

I really did start from the very beginning and have to say that Mark is one of, if not, the best teacher I have had. Truly great, patient and soooo knowledgeable. An absolute pleasure to work with.

Frequently asked questions

I assess their current skill level and tailor an individualized teaching plan for each student. I teach reading standard notation and several exercises of my own that are a lot of fun.

I have a BS from Indiana University and 45 years of teaching and playing experience.

My standard charge is $50.00 per one hour of instruction.

I started part time many years ago while I pursued my profession and eventually left that career and began teaching full time.

Ages 8 years and older; students with special needs.

Call and chat and get a feeling for the instructor and take at least one lesson and if things click continue with them. Ask for reviews from past students.

Are they willing to commit some time and effort to learning to play? It can be one of the most enjoyable activities, but if a person is not willing to practice their instrument they will not achieve the results they desire.
