My teaching approach: My name is Teresa Long and I have been playing the guitar for 15 years. I have experience teaching students from the age of 5 to age 65. I teach theory,basic chord structure, songwriting and performance skills. My influences are: Muddy waters, Little Walter, John Mayer, Jimmy Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan. My guitar lessons take place in The Teacher's Studio. Guitar lessons typically take place when it is is convenient for the teacher and the student. Lessons are by appointment. Guitar Techniques include: Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Songwriting Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: I start by listening to the student play if they have experience, and seeing where they are at with their skill level. Guitar lessons are tailored to each students abilities. The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: I prefer students who practice daily.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I listen to the student play what he/she can and then assess what we need to work on. After that we begin the process of breaking down the areas that the student needs to improve on.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing guitar in public for 15 years. I have been teaching lessons for about 10 years. I have studied music as a concentration at Indiana University in Bloomington. I worked at the Old Town School of Folk music in Chicago for 2 years. I played the Chicago music circuit for 5 years.

I typically charge $16 for a half hour lesson.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching because I was playing so much and I just wanted to share. I love to watch people grow in their abilities as they learn the wonder of the guitar.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students aged 5-65. I have worked with all different types of people. Anyone can learn guitar if they simply apply themselves and dedicate themselves to the learning process.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently went to see Tower of Power at the Embassy Theater in Fort Wayne. It was amazing.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone that you are really excited about learning from. This will keep you inspired to practice!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1.What are you expecting to gain by taking guitar lessons? What is your goal?
2. Do you want to play in public or privately?
3. Are you willing to put in the time it takes to get better?
