What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First lessons are a great way to meet and access new students. I like to get an idea of musical tastes and experience, and guarantee that you will learn something. I start with the basic orientation of the instrument, basic reading, and a fun song the student is familiar with to get them playing from day one.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles under some of the best in the business. My education background is in Jazz, but my early instruction was a lot more centered in Rock and Blues. I enjoy all types of music and am constantly looking for new styles and artist (I always give listening assignments as well to help people understand what they do and do not like, and use this in their own writing). I have played and recorded in a wide variety of styles from Funk and Fusion acts as well as Fingerstyle Guitar, Rock, Country, Blues, and a few Punk bands.
