Janet Coughlin Studio
About
I am certified in teaching music and I taught music for 21 years in Texas and Louisiana. I have taught all ages and levels of experience in my teaching career. I have an extensive resume of stage experience and vocal training as well as my piano background. Teaching is what I enjoy doing the most and I believe I was given a special gift and heart for teaching music!
I find that I learn as much from my students as I teach them! It is a two way process in which we learn from each other. Each student comes with their own joy or sorrow on their lives; I try to get them to trust me to share some of these emotions in their music

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to get to know the student and what they like to do, what their interests are, and other information that might help me understand them better as a student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in piano from Centenary College and I taught in various schools in Caddo Parish on different levels for 21 years. The last assignment was as the teacher of advanced and intermediate piano at Caddo Middle Magnet. I have maintained a private piano and voice studio for 30 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard pricing system is $25 per half hour, $50 per hour. I ask my students to pay a month in advance for lessons in order to keep their place in my studio.
How did you get started teaching?
I have been teaching for thirty years as a private teacher. I started taking lessons at an early age and I knew that teaching was going to be my life and career. I always wanted to be a piano teacher because I love playing the piano and nothing gives me more happiness than seeing a student feel that same joy when they learn or when they open up to the world of singing! Nothing is more satisfying!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all ages and levels of students in piano and voice in my teaching career. Some have been as young as 5 years old and I am currently working with a lady who is 70 and studying both voice and piano. I have had as many as thirty students in my studio, but I have reduced that number presently. I have a few places left to fill.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently was able to arrange a recital for my students to perform with another teacher's students that was very successful. I was extremely proud of my students. Some of them had never performed for an audience before. I am a big believer in having goals to work for.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise them to find someone who had experience in the subject area, someone who you can connect to and someone who will respect your goals and wishes for progress in your subject.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. How do they structure the lessons.
2. What materials will be used?
3. Am I free to stop and ask questions?
4. is there any outside work I need to do?
