About

My teaching approach:

I have a laid-back teaching approach that is directed towards improving the student's technical abilities while also helping them to meet their own personal goals as a guitarist. I have taught well over 100 students in the past 10 years, from beginners to professional gigging guitarists, in various local music stores/churches and at the University of Southern Mississippi (GA) and William Carey University (Adjunct). I gig regularly in Hattiesburg and the surrounding region, and I use this real world experience to inform my teaching.

My influences are:

I can't list all of them (not enough space!) but here are some of the big ones. - Keb' Mo' really inspires my blues phrasing and conception of songwriting. - Joe Pass and Jim Hall are my idols for jazz. - Dave Matthews is an inspiration for his rhythmic sensibilities and chord voicings. - Bob Dylan and John Prine both have an amazing ability to take basic chords and make them into something

My guitar lessons take place in:

Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:

My teaching schedule varies depending upon my student load and my gigging schedule. My job is to play and teach music, so I have plenty of free time to schedule lessons.

Guitar Techniques:

Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Open tuning, Fingerstyle, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Guidance In Equipment Selection

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

Introductory lessons usually take the form of a simple 5-minute diagnostic exam, where I basically have the student play a tune for me(if they can) and then demonstrate their knowledge of scales, technical exercises, chords, etc... so I can get a feel for their strengths and weaknesses. After evaluating their performance, we usually jump right in to a regular guitar lesson.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

A typical guitar lesson will entail some work on technique/fundamentals (finger exercises, theory, ear training, etc...) which then will progress into working on a tune that exploits these technical issues. Depending on the skill level of the student, goal-directed exercises in composition or improvisation may be used to enhance their knowledge of the fret-board. Most lessons cover a wide-variety of material, so bring a notebook!

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

My ideal guitar student is passionate, hard-working, dedicated, and motivated to learn and get better at the guitar. It doesn't matter what their experience level or long-term goals are, I just want a student who wants to learn and enjoys playing the guitar!
