About

I provide in-home lessons with a combination of both jazz and classical music. We also go through music theory, ear training, and rhythm practice. I want to give skills to my students that set them up to be independent musicians!

Stephen is really good with beginner saxophone players. He is able to pace his lessons based on my needs and I really like how he assigns practice material to work on before his the next meeting. We always start off each lesson with reviewing the practice material and he always gives good feedback and is really patient even if I was not able to master the practice material. I would recommend Stephen to anyone who is looking to get better at playing the saxophone.

Stephen was a great mentor and helped me really grasp the basics really quickly. Mr. Tamas really possesses a legitimate love for music, great communication skills, and a great understanding of the fundamentals. He is extremely patient and helped tailor our sessions to my needs. He makes learning music fun!

Stephen was great! I came in with only knowledge in the clarinet, but I wanted to learn sax so I can be in the jazz band. Stephen really helped me get a better tone and was overall a great guy

    Frequently asked questions

On the first lesson, the student will bring to me what they want to work on.  I will gauge from there and make adjustments as needed to technique, embouchure, equipment etc. as needed.  From there we will begin doing repoitoire and technique exercises to continually push and become better at not only playing the instrument but becoming as expressive as possible.

I am finishing my last semester at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee.  I am going to be doing my masters at Boston University.

I have taught at a high school with over 300+ students in the band; about 150 of them were woodwind players.  I was the designated woodwind specialist at the program.  I worked typically in larger groups but gave one-on-one time to students as needed.

My standard pricing is $70 per hour.  However, if a student/family is in financial need, it is negotiable.  Online lessons are the same price as regular lessons, however in person is highly encouraged.

I started teaching in college to gain experience.  I think being able to convey ideas through words is an important part of being a good musician.

I have worked with students of all ages from 5 to 18.  Most students I work with are in beginners.  I am also open to older students who are just starting the saxophone.

Be driven, but be patient.  Things will improve.  You might not see it, but others will.  Hard work always pays off!

Why is the student taking lessons in the first place?  Are they trying to become a performer in the future?  Do they want help making the state band?  Are they trying to a lead player at their school?  Whatever the reason is, my goal is simply to make them a better musician.
