So far I have had one lesson and I can feel that I am progressing already. I learned to read music a lot better than before

This school is a great place to start learning music and then continue all the way. Mr K is wonderful teacher who apart from being a good instructor instills discipline and makes students work hard. I recommend the school strongly.

We have had our children attend Columbia School of Music for 6 years since the oldest was 6 years old. We cannot thank Ms. Mary enough for the kind and effective piano instruction she has provided as well as her flexibility with accommodating our changing schedules. Would absolutely recommend this school for piano without reservation.

  • Andrea O,

Enrolling your child (or yourself!) in music lessons here is one of the best things you could ever do. I was a recreational music student who took piano lessons with Mr. Kurt for 10.5 years, since I was 7 years old. In 2012, I also began taking guitar lessons with him. My time has come to an end only because I will be off to college pursuing a Biology degree on a pre-med track in hopes of becoming a doctor. Kurt, as well as the other instructors, emphasizes technique from the very beginning and truly pushes you to become the best musician and performer you can be. Under his guidance and constructive criticism, I have learned discipline, perseverance, time-management, and determination, all of which helped me graduate in the top 1% of my high school class. Most importantly, I have developed a love for music. While still taking lessons, I took the initiative to create a singing channel on YouTube to post covers of songs I learned independently (ex: youtu.be/1pGBe6rsW9g). I now have over 70 videos posted. In addition, I sang in chorus in middle school, successfully auditioning into the Howard County Gifted & Talented Chorus. I also joined a Guitar program in high school, which culminated in a graduation performance at Merriweather Post Pavilion. My musical, and perhaps academic, achievements would not have happened without the superb instruction I received at Columbia School of Music. In my wonderful time there, I performed at numerous recitals and played through over 60 piano books and 20 guitar books. If you want to excel at singing or playing an instrument, have a vast knowledge of music theory, and set yourself/your child up for all kinds of success, then this is the place for you.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

We develop a step by step program to motivate each student. Detailed lesson assignments are written in a marble notebook at each lesson. We offer a complete program including Piano lessons, Theory, Notespeller, Pop, Disney and Classical Music. Many of our students stay with us an average of ten years or until they go away to college or move out of the area.
