FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

We ask new students a series of questions to discover their interests relevant to piano/voice/music study. We then listen to the student perform whatever pieces they might want to play/sing, or show us arrangements/compositions they have created.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

John Horst: Bachelor of Arts in Piano from the University of Maryland College Park, MD.

Janet Horst: Master of Music Education majoring in Voice

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Tuition reserves the student’s scheduled lesson day & time and is not a fee for service. Payment is due, even if the student misses the lesson. It is payable monthly, or by the semester, online (at studiocantabile.org, but not yet available as of Sept 5, 2016) or by check. Lessons missed by the instructors are always made up or will be credited so that the monthly rate for each 45-minute lesson missed will be reduced by $32, and the monthly rate for each 30-minute lesson missed will be reduced by $22. Tuition can be paid monthly, per semester, or per year:

Monthly: (payment due at the first lesson of each month)

30-minute lesson: $83

45 minute lesson: $125

Fall Semester 2016: (payment due at the first lesson in Sept 2016)

30-minute lesson: $321

45 minute lesson: $482

Spring Semester 2017: (payment due at the first lesson in Jan 2017)

30-minute lesson: $429

45 minute lesson: $643

Piano students must be at least 6 years old. Voice students must be at least 15 years old. All lessons will be 45 minutes long, except for 30-minute lessons for younger beginning students. One lesson per month will be dedicated to music theory lessons, which will also involve homework.

How did you get started teaching?

Janet has taught beginning/intermediate piano and voice students since she was in high school, and she continued teaching individual piano/voice lesson, with John teaching the more advanced piano students. Janet has been a music educator all her adult life. She has written her own music education curriculum and has directed various choirs and orchestras.

What types of students have you worked with?

Studio Cantabile is capabile to instruct beginning to advanced piano, voice, piano accompaniment, music studio recording, improvisation, arrangements, and composition.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Not necessary, since Studio Cantabile instructors ask a series of questions that reveal student interests, requirements, and expectations.
