About

Hello! I am a piano teacher and professional pianist in the Washington, D.C. area, based in Frederick, MD. I have been teaching piano for over 10 years. I believe that music is an art form that can bring joy and depth to a person for a lifetime. I am passionate about helping students of all ages and skill levels discover their passion for music. I believe that learning music should be fun and enjoyable, and I strive to create a positive and supportive learning environment for all of my students.

To me, music is a means of expression that transcends the boundaries of words. It is my deepest conviction that everyone has the potential to be a musician, and I strive to unlock this potential in each and every one of my students. My approach to teaching is grounded in the belief that the best way to learn is by doing, and so I tailor my lessons to suit the individual needs and styles of each student. In addition to teaching, I am an accomplished classical pianist, accompanist and church musician who has performed throughout the D.C. area.

I have been working as a professional pianist since I was fifteen years old. I graduated from Hood College in 2011 with a B.A. in Music (Piano Performance) and was a recipient of the Patricia Bucheimer Piano Prize. I was under scholarship as a student in the Honors Program and a Maryland Distinguished Scholar. Currently, I work as the Staff Pianist at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockville and teach piano in Frederick, MD and Rockville, MD.

I am currently accepting new students for both in-person and virtual lessons.

Justin is an incredibly talented pianist who tailors his lessons to all ages and levels. His technical experience and knowledge of theory really stand out as compared to other instructors. He balances patience and motivation with all of his students, going the extra mile to provide recital opportunities in a relaxed, positive setting. Can’t say enough about the quality of his instruction!

Justin has been very patient with my 8-year old who began with no knowledge of piano. It has now been about 8 months since he started and weve been extremely impressed with the level at which he can now play. Justin is very knowledgeable, is an accomplished pianist, and knows how to adapt his teaching to each individual student. We would highly recommend Justin to anyone interested in learning how to play.

My teenage son has been taking lessons from Justin for 2 years now. He started as the pandemic was improving as a musical kid with no piano experience at all, but a desire to learn. Justin is incredibly talented as both a player and a teacher, but almost as important is his friendly and laid-back demeanor. He never makes my son feel bad if he doesnt have as much time to dedicate to piano in a given week and is always easy-going. Playing piano is 100% my sons choice, so its important he has a passionate and likeable teacher- Justin is 100% both. His annual recitals for the kids are also really beautiful. Weve had a fantastic experience with him so far and highly recommend him.

My son has improved a lot working with Justin. He has been taking lessons now for several years with him. He has received many compliments on his playing by friends of ours and they have been asking who his teacher is. Not only has my son improved a lot, he enjoys learning from Mr. Furnia.

My daughter has been taking piano lessons with Justin for eight years. He is an amazing teacher and I recommend him to everyone interested in taking lessons. Justin is so talented and skilled. He is also patient, enjoys what he does, and my daughter really enjoys taking lessons. I really like how Justin has adapted from when my daughter started lessons with him in elementary school to now being in high school. He is great at pushing her to get the best out of each piece of music, but he does it in such an encouraging way so that she never gets discouraged. Each recital shows Justins diverse ability to teach different students and there are always interesting selections of music is played.
