What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I always interview students to find out what kind(s) of music they listen to, aspire to play, whether or not they’ve had any experience with theory, ear training, composition, etc. Once I learn more about a student’s interests and musical history I can then help write a syllabus that will help them attain their goals.. provided that they practice ;)
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
BA in Music Performance/Business from UMASS and private study with composer/conductor Paul Gay and classic guitarist Ricardo Cobo.
I have been teaching guitar, composition, and theory since I graduated in 1996.

$32/46/60 for 30/45/60 minute lessons.
How did you get started teaching?
After a short stint working as a recording engineer I decided to refocus my attention to education. I had a few great students while I was doing studio work and quite literally felt better after working with them. I had a far greater feeling that I was making a difference in someone’s life.
What types of students have you worked with?
Classical, flamenco, jazz, and rock.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
That’s just it.. the teacher has to be willing to interview the student to familiarize themselves with the student’s short and long term goals. Otherwise, the student’s needs may be replaced with working strictly from a method book or on material that isn’t inspiring to play. As a student, you should feel confident [after the first couple of lessons] that there is good chemistry and that your instructor understands what you want out of lessons and has the capacity to guide your progress.
