About

Lessons are geared towards helping you achieve your goals in every single session and making you a great guitar player while having fun at the same time.

Playing and teaching guitar is my passion. Music gets more fun and rewarding the more you can play what you want. I love guiding my students to become great guitar players.

I love working with absolute beginners who barely know how to hold the guitar and taking them step-by-step to becoming players who can jam with others and play the way the only dreamed of before.

I also love helping intermediate players who may have developed bad habits or just know bits and pieces of songs and/or theory and filling in the holes for them. By refining their technique, filiing in the gaps in their knowledge, and making their practice time extremely efficient average players become great players.

The teacher is great at watching and listening to my playing. He excels at correcting my playing in a manner that I understand and doesnt make me feel like I shouldnt be playing guitar. Its a real pleasure to learn from Ryan. I am a much better player and learning so quickly I really cant believe it.

I thought that the lessons offered were a great way to both practice as well as get feedback from the teacher and other students.
The exercises are taught in a way to both improve specific playing but also improve practicing in general. Each time I go back to an exercise I feel like I played it better than the time before.
The teacher is a good way of spotting poor play as well as explaining the correct way to do it so you get immediate corrections.
The environment for learning is very comfortable both as a brand new student as well as after a year of lessons.

Twin Cities guitar makes learning or improving guitar skills approachable and fun. I take lessons and so do my kids. it’s engaging and appropriate for all skill levels from beginner to advanced and really enjoyable as well as helpful and productive. I find it’s an exceptionally rewarding experience and quite a unique opportunity to learn.

If youve spent any part of your life fighting off that nagging feeling that you shouldve been better at guitar by now and dont really know what to do with all of the half-learned licks, handful of cowboy chords, and that one tapping thing you learned when you discovered Eddie Van Halen (or whatever technique alongside insert-artist-here), you should do yourself a favor and at least meet with Ryan Popovic. If you would like to avoid the years of wasted time and regret you might experience building up to the situation I just described and would rather feel accomplished and confident with the instrument much earlier in your journey, you should do yourself a favor and at least meet with Ryan Popovic.
Ive played guitar (if you can call it that) and been 99.9% self-taught (if you can call it that) for decades, and I have had more fun and learned more about my playing and instruments in the past few months than all the decades that preceded it combined.
What I like best about the classes is the small group format with people of all kinds of different skill levels and musical interests. At first I was concerned about how not having focused individual instruction might be a detriment, but it turns out having all the different perspectives, challenges, questions, and triumphs of the different people in the room is inspiring and instructive. Many folks ask things I would not have thought to ask, and I still get to learn more as a result. Everyone is really supportive, and Ryan is a great, patient teacher working with everyone long enough to answer questions and set them to work on what they need before giving them the freedom to work that idea and make some needed mistakes and discoveries while moving to the next student rather than hawking over one persons situation the entire session.
The most amazing and fun thing for me personally so far is how I find myself experiencing both older favorite songs as well as things Ive not heard before in a different way. My ears are starting to hear more technical detail in whats happening and relating it to how I might someday actually be able to play whichever part or song, where in the past I mightve just been in total awe of someones technical chops and didnt think Id ever be at a level to even attempt to play their music.
Whatever fears have you still sitting on the fence about committing to lessons, I feel extremely confident in saying they will quickly melt away if you can just bring yourself to START! Its so much fun!
I wish I had done this literally decades ago. Im exceedingly grateful to have had the right teacher appear when this particular student was ready. I cant recommend Ryan highly enough.

I am a beginner guitar player and I really appreciate how patient Ryan has been. He has taught me not only how to strum, play notes and chords, but has also helped me understand the guitar and proper technique. He keeps it interesting and fun and adapts the lessons to my interests. He also finds unique ways of helping me when I am stuck on a specific skill. Highly recommend Twin Cities Guitar.

    Frequently asked questions

It's very important for me to understand where you are as a player and where you want to go.

What are your biggest struggles on the guitar?

What style(s) do you want to play? Do you want to be in a band, play live, play by yourself on the front porch, or record?

I offer a free introductory lesson where we can make sure we are a good fit for each other and talk further about your goals and different options for lessons.

I participate in ongoing monthly guitar-teaching education and training. I attend yearly seminars with top music teachers from around the world to ensure that I am on the leading-edge of teaching guitar.

You can be sure that you are getting excellent instruction with the absolute best strategies and techniques so that you can achieve your guitar-playing goals.

I have a number of different programs with varying tuition.

I work with all kinds of students. I teach everyone from kids to adults in their 80's, absolute never-picked-up-a guitar beginners to advanced players.

One student tells me that after every lesson his wife asks him, "Did you learn something? Did you have fun?". Invariably he always answers her "yes" with a big smile.

Some guitar players who are looking for an instructor just go off of location and lowest price.  Don't make this mistake. Finding the right guitar teacher will save you time (sometimes years of effort and frustration) and money (because you can reach your goals faster). And you'll have a lot more fun becoming the player you want to be!

I have an excellent guide on how to choose a guitar teacher that I can provide for you so that you know that you're making the absolute best decision for you.
