About

My teaching approach:

I usually sit down and talk to the student for a few minutes to figure out what their immediate and long-term goal with the instrument are. After that is established, I like to start with the foundations of music theory and basic guitar technique. After the student has begun to acquire a basic command of the instrument, we move into learning songs. I let the student choose the songs and music they want to learn, while occasionally assigning songs of my choosing which I feel would help the student reach his/her musical goals. The student will be sent home with materials to practice with.

My influences are:

My influences are Allan Holdsworth, Art Tatum, Shawn Lane, Hiromi Uehara, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Georges Cziffra, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Nirvana, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Oscar Peterson, John McLaughlin, The Roots, Metallica, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Kazuhito Yamashita, and many others.

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

The first lesson is generally half talking and half playing. I like to chat with my students and figure out what they want from studying guitar and music in general. After we have established some goals and aspirations, I will then have the student play me something if they have any prior experience and decide where to go next from there. If they are a complete beginner, I will start with basics, such as the proper way to hold the guitar, posture, the string names, and probably a very basic finger exercise to give them something to get started with.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

The first couple minutes are usually used to discuss any problems the student is having with what they were assigned the following week. After that, I try to offer and effective solution to their problems and have them play what they were assigned so I can assess their progress. After I am convinced that they have grasped the concepts of the assignment, we then can move on to something new. Sometimes I may have a student bring in a song that he or she wants to learn. I will take a few minutes to transcribe the song and explain the basic structure of it to the student, then begin teaching.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

An ideal student understands that home practice is key if you want to succeed in any instrument. The student would be someone who listens and applies the information they receive in the lesson efficiently. Also, he or she would have to have the persistence to stick with practicing even when the results are not always immediate. To me, an ideal student would also explore and expand on the teachings they received.
