Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
At the first lesson, I try to get to know the student and their goals and interests. I also assess their current skill level. Depending on their skill level, I typically will recommend a guitar method book that I use to help students gain fundamentals and mark progress. I try to create a fun and supportive environment where I balance introducing students to the fundamentals and working on songs and styles that they are interested in. I've found this balance helps keep things fun and motivating.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing guitar for 27 years. I've been performing publicly for about 25 years around the region with various groups.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lessons are 30 minutes long and held weekly at my studio. Lesson price is $110 per month. Tuition is due at the first lesson of the month. Cash, check and Venmo is accepted.
How did you get started teaching?
I had always received requests for lessons over the years and aside from a couple friends/family members I hadn't seriously considered giving lessons. In early 2018, I had a received a request for lessons and decided to do it. From that one request, it has ignited a passion to teach and mentor others on their journey to learn the guitar and meet their goals.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with children and adults. I'm happy to work with anyone that has a desire to learn how to play.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I always advise people to look for a teacher that is willing to customize their lesson plans to meet each student's unique goals. While there is a certain amount of fundamental skills that need to be taught, many of these skills can be incorporated while learning songs and styles that each student is interested in.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The student should have access to a working guitar. The instrument should be able to hold tuning and be in playable condition. While the instrument doesn't need to be top of the line, a difficult to play guitar will not be enjoyable and can cause a student to give up.
Also understand that learning the guitar does not happen overnight. It is a journey that requires time and effort. While everyone progresses at their own pace, I believe everyone can learn to play.
