    Frequently asked questions

Mastery of any musical instrument involves not only being able to play the correct notes at the correct time, but also being able to express feelings and tell stories through music. It is my goal to develop the necessary skills in each student to provide a comprehensive understanding of music that will enable them to perform with enjoyment and musicality.

A supportive atmosphere with honest critique encourages students to become independent learners. I teach my students strategies for efficient learning that they can use in their at-home practice and urge students to become self-motivated and make changes to their own playing. It is my goal to teach students to become self-sufficient problem solvers, a skill that will not only help in their music study, but in all aspects of life.

I approach music education comprehensively through weekly private lessons and studio events. During lessons, time is spent on technique, sight-reading, ear-training, theory, and repertoire. An emphasis is placed on classical repertoire, although students are always encouraged to bring music that interests them and aids them in reaching their personal musical goals.

I believe that music benefits all individuals, regardless of age and ability. The studio is comprised of students of preschool age, retired adults, and all ages in between. Musical study develops not only a love of music, but also important skills for life – such as concentration, perseverance, creativity, diligence, and dedication. Parents are strongly encouraged to be actively involved in and supportive of their child’s music education.

Through music study, we learn to appreciate the beauty in the world…I hope you’ll join me and encourage the inner musician in you or your child!

You'll want a teacher who will inspire and nurture a student's musical growth and instill lifelong love of music. When seeking a music teacher:

    • Consult with friends, family and others who are acquainted with teachers in your community.
    • Ask for recommendations from local music teacher organizations, music stores, schools or churches.
    • Arrange to interview prospective teachers, in person if possible, before making a commitment.
    • Ask permission to attend a recital or listen to a performance of the prospective teacher's students.

Teachers are willing and eager to explain their techniques and objectives. Below are important questions to ask a teacher to understand their teaching style and how it will fit with your needs. But most importantly, consider what you really want to be able to do with music. Do you want to be able to play a certain piece or style of music? Do you want to focus on writing music? Make sure that you are upfront with your specific goals with your teacher and do not be afraid to communicate desires with your teacher. The teacher will be thankful that they don't have to guess at your goals and aspirations!

Questions to consider asking your teacher to understand expectations and teaching style...

    • What is your professional and educational experience in music?
    • What is your teaching experience? What age groups do you teach?
    • How do you participate in ongoing professional development?
    • Do you have a written studio policy? Will you review it with me?
    • Do you regularly evaluate student progress?
    • What instructional materials do you use?
    • What kinds of music do you teach?
    • What other elements are part of your teaching curriculum?
    • Do you offer group lessons?
    • Do you require students to perform in studio recitals during the year?
    • Do you offer other performance opportunities for your students, such as festivals and competitions?
    • Do you use technology in your studio, such as computers, music instruction software, digital keyboards?
    • How much practice time do you require each day?
    • What do you expect of your students? Their parents?
