About

I enjoy seeing my students master a concept I am teaching and I love helping them develop as musicians. I have been teaching and performing music for over 35 years and I teach all ages and ability levels. As a former school administrator, I am exceptional at differentiating instruction to match ability and skill levels. I will develop an individualized program for each of my students that enables each to achieve his or her goals. I teach basic, classical, and jazz piano, trumpet (and other brass instruments), songwriting, composition, and music theory.

I am blessed to be able to play piano, organ, and trumpet professionally and to conduct choral and instrumental ensembles. I am a published composer and arranger, and I have a passion for music that extends far beyond any single genre. When you are passionate about something, you want to share it; therefore, I am very pleased to be able to teach others the skills, styles, and history of music that will help them to develop their passion for this magnificent pastime.

Remember, when you can play a musical instrument, you never have to be bored, and this is an activity that you can do for their entire lives.

Working with Roy has been awesome! He is very patient with me. Not only does he work on the piano lessons with me but explains music theory to help me better understand why a composer is utilizing certain techniques. Roy has been a great teacher and I highly recommend him for any level of pianist.

I get very good feedback as a piano student that helps me grow in all sorts of directions musically. From the student standpoint, I never feel like I am being criticized, everything is always constructive and helpful.

Roy is an outstanding music instructor!! He really makes learning an instrument fun. Roy takes the time to get to know your personality and applies it to a learning style that best fits you. I have been a student of his weekly for about 2 years now, and always walk away having learned something new. He is always prepared for lessons, and regularly goes over the scheduled time to make sure you understand the lesson. Check him out!

    Frequently asked questions

I like to get to know the student first, and then find out a little about their goals for learning to play an instrument.  I then start tailoring a program that is individualized based on the student's needs and goals.

I have a bachelor's degree in music, a master's degree in music and education, and a second master's degree in educational administration.

Yes, each lesson is $23.00 per 30 minute lesson.  Lessons are paid in advance monthly, and if a student has to miss a lesson, as long as there is advance notice, I will try to schedule a make up lesson with that student.

I have been teaching privately since sophomore year of college, and as I was working through my first master's degree in music composition, I became certified to teach in the public schools.

All ages and ability levels.  I work with students who are quite accomplished, students who are beginners, students who read music, and students who do not read music.  I also work with students who have special learning needs.

One of my students who takes both jazz and classical piano lessons from me recently played a piece for me that we were working on.  This piece is quite challenging, but my student played it magnificently.  I am so proud!!!

Find someone who is personable and who is committed to your success.  Playing music is fun, and your teacher should enjoy working with you and seeing you flourish.

    1.  Is this teacher someone whom I can learn from?

    2.  Does this teacher have experience working with someone like me?

    3.  Is this teacher going to be patient with me, or will my lessons be stressful?

    4.  Does the teacher seem genuine about teaching or is the teacher just in it for the money?
