About this pro

My name is Jimmy Hudson, I just moved to Columbus from Memphis Tn where I have been a professional guitarist for over 20 years. I have many years experience in teaching, touring, and recording sessions and can help you achieve any goal you have in mind.

I have toured with some of the top acts out there and have the experience that you will not get anywhere else. I also earned my education at the Atlanta Institute of Music and The University of Colorado Boulder, For almost 9 years I also was Shawn Lane's guitar tech and student and have also studied under Jimmy Herring (Allman Bros, The Dead, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Widespread Panic) while attending AIM.

I have sought out many of todays top players for private lessons as well while touring. I am also the founder and former owner of the world renowned American Guitar Institute in Memphis TN. I teach on every level to anyone who wants to take a serious approach on the guitar and at some point have performed or recorded every style out there.

We take a very intense approach right from day one focusing on technique and advanced concepts so your fingers are never a limitation, then we dive into practical music theory explained in a way that you can understand and use it. After just a couple months of lessons you will be able to play any song you could ever imagine and you will be able to build any chord or scale anywhere on the neck and know how to use them!

Even if you are a professional player I can help you reach new heights. My students have been featured on national radio and television including Jay Leno and David Letterman, plus other student have gone on to earn fully paid scholarships at some of the most prestigious music colleges in the world.

My rates are very reasonable so if you really want to improve your playing please don't hesitate to call or txt me. You can find some of my playing at jimmyhudsonband.com and my youtube channel is whitecrane1234 All of my lessons are an hour long taught in my 350sf home recording studio conveniently located at Sawmill Rd and 270!

You will not find a cooler studio to learn out of anywhere near here as I have a Dual Screen Mac Set Up and all the lessons are emailed to you and put up on my 60 inch TV. I use Presonus Gear using Logic Pro and an 88 weighted key keyboard, E Drums, computers, tablets, ad phone apps, along with all kinds of new software and apps to assist you in learning, plus many guitars and other instruments.

If you are bringing your kids or teenagers in for lessons I have plenty of room for you to sit in on the lesson as there is a futon and a fireplace in my studio or you can enjoy some of the best shopping in town just 2 minutes away. I am a Thumbtack.com and takelessons.com gold member where they do a full background check with all your credentials plus a full Dept of Justice Background check so you can rest assured I come in Peace and mean no harm and this is verified and can be seen on my website!

Now here is the other cool part, I do not make you fill out any paperwork, no contracts or obligations. You can pay by the lessons or in advance, whichever is easiest for you. I also am not strict on a 24 hour cancelation as hey this life, things happen, people get sick, cars break down. I am here to give you a great education and make this a fun experience not make you feel like you are visiting the dentist. We can always do a makeup lesson if you are able as I teach 6 days a week from early afternoon till night.

I only do hour long lessons as I feel like a half hour is not really long enough to really accomplish much however I book my students at least 15 minutes apart because sometimes I might go over a little bit to make sure you understand what we are working with. Most of the studios and stores in town charge 30 or more a half hour. I am very competitive in my pricing plus I have the education and real life experience not to mention a relaxed environment, Im easy to do business with plus instead of learning in a room the size of a closet I have the ultimate guitarists sanctuary! Oh and here is some testimonials from actual students!

Because I love what I do therefore I do not have to work.

Jimmy Hudson is a Great guitar teacher who can benefit beginning students as well as advanced players. He has a formal music education background and founded a guitar education school in Memphis, Tennessee, and he has Taught guitar lessons as well as played guitar professionally for years locally as well as touring with national acts as a lead guitarist. He is a caring husband and father who loves teaching guitar lessons.

I am purchasing lessons from Jimmy Hudson as a gift for my father. He's been very accommodating and seems to have a lot of experience in blues which is what my dad is interested in. My dad is disabled and Jimmy is setting up in his living room so that my dad won't have to climb the basement stairs. I'll come back and leave a more detailed review as my dad goes through his lessons. So far, Jimmy seems to have been a good choice.

After 2 lessons with Jimmy I have improved on my overall technique and cleaning up my tones as well increased speed; more progress than past two months. Jimmy is extremely knowledgeable and takes you to the next level. If you listen to his instruction and do the practice time you will improve. I'll be so much more prepared for my next gig. Thanks Jimmy!

After a month studying under Jimmy my guitar skills have skyrocketed. I didn't realize how much I was stuck on a plateau until I compare recordings from a month ago. Jimmy has assisted me in reaching new levels of lead guitar and knowledge of theory so that I am now playing lead roles and improvising beyond what I thought capable. I have the technique, skills and self confidence to take lead with my band, and my fellow band members have all asked what my secret has been in my phrasing and solo's; the secret is simple a great instructor and structured practice. Now my practice time is much more productive. Jimmy really understands how to custom teach and improve weaknesses I was unable to even understand without his help. Thanks Jimmy for helping me reach new goals and my true potential.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

The first thing we do is cover proper technique, how to hold the guitar properly, how to be able to play by instinct without having to think about where your fingers should go or how to pick something. I set you up to be able to play anything you could ever imagine playing and beyond and we use modern technology with some really cool apps, ipads, and my 60 inch TV.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I graduated from the Atlanta Institute of Music in what should have been my senior year in high school. While at AIM one of my professors just happened to be Jimmy Herring from ARU, The Dead, Allman Bros, and Widespread Panic. I also became Shawn Lane's tech and student and worked with him for 8 years and have learned from some of the best players in the world with over 25 years professional experience.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

$50 an hour, most folks are charging 25 or 30 per half hour but I feel there is not really much to accomplish in that short of time plus I allow a 15 to 30 minute window in between students so that if I need to go over in time I can of which I do not charge.

How did you get started teaching?

I was inspired by the 2 teachers I had growing up and music school.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with hundreds of students over the years ranging from beginners to professionals. I even taught Al Green's Guitarist and saw him perform on Jay Leno and David Letterman. I work with anyone ages 12 and up as long as they are serious about learning and can put in the time to learn.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Releasing my own original material and this last summer our 2nd gig as the Jimmy Hudson Band in Ohio we played in front of over 3000 people! I have played crowds this size and bigger working as a sideman but never with my own band!

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Call or Text Jimmy Hudson, no one around has the experience I have or play like I do.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Is his name Jimmy Hudson? If not then you are talking to the wrong teacher!
