I have a long-standing belief that being a musician means (literally) finding your voice, and expressing the beauty inside you. ... Cheesy, but the truth! In my life as a teacher, this means trusting the intuitiveness and natural artistry of my students while providing the know-how that I've absorbed through two decades of hard work and focused practice. Each and every student is unique, and I enjoy the process of discovering the styles, preferences, motivations, flaws, and obsessions of each one. If you choose me as a teacher, I hope you'll find that I'm committed to doing the work of creating a curricular plan that matches with what you or your child wants and needs, even if that means venturing a little ways outside of my comfort zone! I'm addicted to challenge and openness, and I hope to convey those traits in my teaching and I hope they are what make me stand out.
In a word, everything. To be more particular though, I like watching a person go from having a few (or undeveloped) abilities to having the ability to create something that is a reflection of them. Even though I've been a musician for virtually my entire life, I'm still cowed and discouraged by plateaus and feelings of having hard limits, and it's still beautiful to see that whatever we think about ourselves, we are always capable of MUCH more. Optimism and excitement are great feelings, and as an educator I get to feel them all the time and it's awesome!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I was fortunate enough to study music theory, performance, and pedagogy at the college level, and I've also taken many years of private instruction. I've been a professional musician for well over a decade and have played in all kinds of different circumstances as a soloist, accompanist, band leader, keyboardist, and guitarist.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would say, go with your gut. Sometimes a highly qualified person will be the wrong fit, and sometimes a new teacher is exactly what you need. The right teacher will make it a lot easier to weather the storms and will be a positive person in your life regardless of their particular background, style, or method.
