"Education is not the filling of a vessel, but the kindling of a flame."
While I am classically trained, I embrace a versatile teaching style, always tailored to you.
I've been teaching private piano and flute lessons for over 15 years. During that time, I have devoted myself to working in diverse arenas to enhance accessibility of music, including groups for stroke patients, and an after-school class for preschool students.
Most recently, I have introduced the Rose City Piano Studio Distance Learning Program, which makes piano lessons available to students 18 and over. No commute means more time to practice!
I believe the best teachers are lifelong students, and as such, I'm committed to ongoing professional development. I am an active member of pedagogy forums and attend conferences and workshops. I have consulted with experts in the fields of music and medicine, read extensively -- from recent studies about music and the brain to out-of-print essays published during the golden age of piano.
As a child, I studied with Cynthia Pace, daughter of the renowned pedagogue, Robert Pace. While a student at the University of Arizona, I studied music theory with Dr. Timothy Kolosick and piano performance with Dr. June Chow-Tyne.

Gosh, what don't I enjoy? I love seeing people's faces light up as they recognize that they can engage with the music they love in this profoundly meaningful way.
I love the laughter that emerges as people begin to let go of their self-criticism and have fun as they progress.
I love being able to show students how to get past those "tricky parts" in songs, or to stop feeling pain by making a simple adjustment of technique.
I love that online lessons opens up availability to everyone during more flexible hours.
Jessica is amazing! Her love of music is obvious, and infectious. She's also incredibly patient, and tailors her lessons to her students' ability. I swear I'm practically tone deaf, but I've learned so much more under her than my previous teachers!
A lifelong piano student, I continued my studies in music theory and piano performance in college. I have been teaching students of all ages and abilities for nearly two decades.
I am also a NASM-certified personal trainer, and currently studying for my life coach certification.
