About

I am extremely versatile. I love teaching all ages and all levels. I have many years of experience and am always learning myself and keeping it fresh. I teach piano, flute. voice , jazz, classical, different genres, improvization and music theory. I strive to tailor instruction around each individual's needs and goals. I like to have fun and really enjoy the teaching process. I want the student to enjoy the process and achieve their goals. I also own a drum set and know basic drumming and find that can be helpful to the student's overall learning process. I have performed and recorded jazz professionally for over 30 years with top, world reknowned jazz musicians and am currently performing still.

I love music first of all! I love helping others and watching the student grow and progress and engage in what they really love doing. It's rewarding and fun and I get to learn as well. I love hearing them perform pieces they've been working on at student recitals we have every year.

Cheryl Alex is a passionate joyful teacher who engages each of her students at whatever level they are at. Equally conversant on flute, piano, voice or accompaniment, Cheryl is able to teach any and all of these skills, fostering her student’s interests and encouraging their musical explorations. A local performing musician, music flows through Cheryl’s veins and it is her love of sharing music that makes her teaching so special. Lessons with Cheryl are spirited, she often accompanies her students, allowing them to understand what it is to play in time, to be on the beat, and to feel the music flow through them as it does through her.

I’ve taken lessons from Cheryl for 10 years now, and the experience is just as wonderful now as it has ever been. I’m going off to college this year and I know that I’m going to miss her so much. She is caring and supportive, as well as incredible knowledgeable in the realm of music. She’s passionate about teaching and music in general and puts all energy and effort into helping her students be the best musicians they can be!

Cheryl relates to both of my kids as musicians and works towards practical, personal goals. She is a great musician herself and knows how to push her students into real directions.

    Frequently asked questions

I get to know the student a bit and learn of their interests and goals. Whether they are beginning or intermediate or advanced, we start where they are comfortable and work from there.  I utilize certain method books, ear training, theory, exercises to help the student progress.  For jazz, It's a little different. We work with improvisation and a little more theory.

I studied music at P.SU. and Mt. Hood Community College.  I won the KMHD Best new jazz artist award in 1984 and was awarded a scholarship to Berklee College of music in Boston.  I did not attend Berklee as I decided to have children.
