About

In my studio, music is a means of self-expression and self-discovery. Regardless of musical tastes and interests, all students should feel empowered to express themselves through their playing. Learning an instrument takes discipline and vulnerability, but there’s plenty of room for fun. Even as my students develop a strong technical foundation, my underlying goal is for them to fall in love with the piano and become lifelong musicians.

My foundational principles are that:

• every human being is inherently musical, and

• piano is a learnable skill.

Even if you’ve never used your music-making muscles, they’re still in there! Whether your goal is to accompany yourself on popular songs or to perform a sonata for a packed concert hall, reaching that goal depends less on “talent” than on commitment to practice.

Teaching also pushes me to live in an atmosphere of growth. I've always been an enthusiastic learner, and it's inspiring to be a part of other people's learning process.

Stephan is such a great piano teacher. Working with them has helped to improve my sight singing skills and nervousness around playing in front of others. Always diligent, considerate, patient, and encouraging, I would highly recommend Stephan to any prospective student.

Stephan is such an amazing teacher! I cant believe how much better Ive gotten at piano since I started lessons with them. They put a lot of thought into what I should work on, and recommend exercises and etudes that will help with the skills Im practicing. Also they did all this over virtual lessons on Zoom! 5 stars, totally recommend them to anyone!

    Frequently asked questions

I began playing piano at age 6 and went on to study under jazz pianist Vicki Brabham for several years. As a teenager, my passions were ragtime, boogie-woogie, and novelty piano. In high school, I accompanied my school’s young women’s vocal jazz ensemble and sang in the mixed jazz ensemble. It wasn’t until college that I fell in love with classical repertoire. In 2020 I earned my certificate in teaching beginning piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music. I currently study piano with Amie Belisle and voice with Nevada Jones. I’m a member of MTNA and OMTA, as well as the Vibrant Music Teaching community, which gives me access to countless games and creative activities to use in lessons. With most beginning students, I use the Piano Safari method books for their exciting rote pieces, imaginative technique exercises, and intervallic approach to reading. On occasion I use (or supplement with) Piano Pronto and Faber’s wide range of publications to suit individual interests and needs. Eventually most students transition to the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Celebration Series, the ABRSM’s Jazz Piano series, and/or other high-quality collections of repertoire. Interested students are supported in preparing for Syllabus, RCM exams, and festivals. As a singer-songwriter, I have performed for diverse audiences in the US, Europe, and Japan. I've had the honor of visiting high schools in Japan and the US to perform in classrooms and answer students' questions about songwriting, recording, touring, and music business. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies from the University of Oregon, with a minor in French and a strong focus on Queer Studies. I’m also an avid birder.
