I talk to them about what they want to do with the guitar. I examine their hand reach and spread, and assess their comfort level with the instrument.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

We start by tuning up. Then we talk about the last week's assignments, discuss questions and challenges, how what we're learning is reflected in the song list of the week go over any enrichment lessons, songs and theory.
