About

I specialize in teaching violin, viola, cello and bass, as well as beginning piano. I enjoy teaching all levels from the beginner to the pre-professional. My teaching style is patient and positive and my primary goal is to instill an ongoing love of music. I have all required school district clearances. Lessons are taught in my studio at 3201 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, 15116.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in music education and a Master’s degree in performance, both from Duquesne University. I started the orchestra program in the Fox Chapel Area School District where I taught for many years. I was a co-founder of the Strings North Program, and I was instrumental in creating the PMEA Honors Orchestra. I currently conduct the Pittsburgh Historical Music Society, an early music ensemble and continue to perform frequently.

Starting my lessons with William has been absolutely the best way for me to learn violin as a beginner! As someone who has some music experience but no violin, he met me where I was in terms of music knowledge and every lesson is full of helpful information and exercises. I have enjoyed every lesson. I highly recommend learning violin (or any instrument) with him!

William has been instrumental in my journey in learning how to play the viola. I had no prior musical experience, but with his guidance I have come a long way as an adult student in just a few months. He has provided me not only with the resources and tools to build my skills, but also the confidence and desire to stick with it. I look forward to my weekly lessons with William because he is a wonderful teacher and truly such a kind person. He is an extremely talented and knowledgeable instructor, with an innate ability to connect with his students and draw on their strengths to maximize the experience. He has made what seemed like a daunting task of learning an instrument excitingly doable, as I walk away after my lessons each week feeling like I’ve made new progress and learned something new. I am so thankful that I stumbled across his profile here on lessons.com because he is the kind of teacher that you can tell is truly passionate about what he does and I genuinely enjoy his company during our lessons. Highly recommend, one of the best teachers I have ever had!!

My first lesson I snapped a string, then couldnt tighten the peg, then my chair was too close to the monitor... I was a mess! But William was very patient, and good humored about it all. He even found tunes that didnt use the E string!

I started working with William as an adult student. I played violin growing up but stopped once I graduated from high school. William has really helped me regain my skills and refine my technique after nearly 15 years of not playing. He is patient, positive, and extremely personable and I really enjoy my lessons.

    Frequently asked questions

The goal of the first lesson is to get acquainted with the student and make them feel comfortable working with me. It can be intimidating to play for a new teacher and I strive to make it a very positive experience. For students who already play, I will ask them to play pieces with which they are familiar so that I can have a good understanding of their current progress and the areas that need to be addressed. I will also discuss their individual goals with them to determine a plan for them to progress as they desire. I want each student to enjoy their lessons and know that we will start from where they are and we will work together to improve their skills and musical development

I charge $25.00 per half hour. Students pay weekly at the lesson.

I attended Duquesne University as a music education major. I graduated and was hired by the Fox Chapel Area School District to introduce a string instrument program to the district (They only offered chorus and band at the time). I have taught continuously since that time. I took an early retirement from Fox Chapel Area and have devoted myself to private music instruction. Private teaching is not a side job for me it is my primary musical endeavor.

I have worked with students of all ages and abilities from age 5 upwards. I have taught beginners through pre-professional. A significant number of my pupils that have become professional musicians. My job is to facilitate the student in achieving their musical goals.

I conduct an orchestra in which a number of my current and former adult students are members. It is very gratifying to see them enjoy the experience of creating music on their instruments!

I would suggest you find an experienced teacher with excellent playing skills. You should find a teacher with a temperament that you allows you to grow as a musician and enjoy playing your instrument

Students should ask themselves if they are willing to practice regularly, be consistent with attending lessons, and be willing to change their playing habits to improve their technique. Students should also have an idea of where they want to go with the instrument and what level of playing they want to achieve. Finally, the student should think about what styles of music they would like to pursue on their chosen instrument.
