My teaching approach:

I have constructed a curriculum based on the aspects I found worked and didn't work from a wide array of teachers I have had the benefit of learning from over the past ten years. I stress an equal emphasis on getting to the heart of the music, learning what the students wants to play, ear training, theory, jamming, and how the guitar fits in an arrangement given a particular song in a particular genre. But above all, I will get my students playing how and what they want to play.

With enough teaching experience a teacher can get usually gain a quick assessment of a where a student is at. Besides visual and aural clues, I would ask questions about length of time spent playing, if they had been taught before, etc.

It would start with an assessment of the student's abilities, and then I proceed to discover what makes the student or what could make the student passionate about music, whether that is a certain style or genre, and that pursue that passion. Lesson's vary depending on the level of skill and interest of student, but it generally consists of blocks of time devoted to warm-ups, technical skills, ear-training, learning songs, and playing together.
