About
When I was a boy my grandma bought me a Roy Clark starter guitar. That first month proved difficult, but once I learned my first song I was off to the races and haven't looked back. Now 23 years later the guitar is still an essential part of my life, and I love to share my devotion to the guitar through teaching others this wonderful instrument.
Qualifications
1. 13 years teaching experience, with 10 years experience teaching private guitar lessons.
2. 23 years experience playing with a particular passion for classical and flamenco style. I am also well versed in playing rock, blues, jazz, country and folk.
3. I can read music and am proficient in music theory.
4. I have my own practice studio for private lessons. I also can travel to a student's home if need be.
When the light goes off in a student's head and that lesson's information turns into knowledge...knowledge a student will forever hold...that's what I enjoy. The guitar is a beautiful, versatile instrument capable of conveying both grand joy and haunting melancholy. It's my job to provide the tools where a student can make the guitar truly sing. When I accomplish that, there's no greater reward.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I believe in teaching the fundamentals of music while working with music/genres enjoyed by the student. In our first lesson, I assess a student's guitar ability to know where to begin. As the lessons continue, we study the student's genre of choice while concurrently working on the fundamentals needed to successfully play the instrument.
I believe in a weekly or bi-weekly (once every 2 weeks) approach for lessons. In order to be successful at an instrument, students need daily practice. My lessons come with daily practice exercises designed to keep students engaged with the material.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a public school teacher and have been teaching for 13 years. Additionally, I have taught private guitar lessons for 10 years and have played guitar for 23.
I have an Master's of Teaching Arts.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$35 a lesson at my home studio
$50 a lesson if I travel to the student's house.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching in college to pay the bills. Later on when I made a career out of public school teaching, I got back into teaching guitar.
What types of students have you worked with?
I am comfortable teaching beginner, intermediate, and advanced students.
I have experience teaching younger students as well. I am willing to teach students ages 6 and up.
I love teaching adults how to play guitar! You are never too old to begin playing.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently, I began a Guitar Club at the high school where I teach. We are currently working on learning songs for the ESL Cultural Heritage event in March. My students have been diligently working on their songs and I can't wait for them to showcase their talents! :-)
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher that has the patience and experience to meet you on your level. All students have the ability to learn guitar. And there are some who might know how to play but need a fresh direction.
