Daniel T. says, "Our philosophy and principals of self defense are in agreement. Due to some previously scheduled surgery I only just attended my first private lesson. The facility is excellent, the breadth of training available is ample, and the techniques concentrate on complementing the body's natural reaction to sudden threat stimulus and concentrate on gross motor skills rather than complex techniques. This approach reduces reaction time vis a vis Hicks law and the OODA loop. I look forward to my next session. These skills can be learned by all, regardless of age, infirmity, or prior skill sets." With over two decades immersed in boxing and fitness, my journey has been a blend of athletic achievement, rigorous training, and a passion for coaching and developing fighters. My career began with six years of amateur boxing competition, a time that allowed me to hone my skills in the ring while developing a deep understanding of technique, strategy, and the discipline required to excel. This foundation built the way for my transition into the professional boxing arena, where I competed for eight years, gaining a wealth of experience and insight into the demands of high-level competition. Your tai chi chuan questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do Tai Chi classes cost?

Tai Chi classes cost $60 to $150 per month, depending on the school, location, and number of classes per week included in the membership plan. Classes held at community centers typically cost less than those held in professional marital arts dojos, and some local parks offer free classes.

Many schools offer individual drop-in classes for $15 to $25 each. A drop-in class provides you with the perfect opportunity to evaluate the school and instructors to make sure they're a good fit for you before signing a membership contract.

Online Tai Chi classes cost $15 to $50 per month for unlimited access. However, you may benefit more by taking some in-person classes first to ensure you're practicing with the correct form.

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is a noncompetitive martial arts practice that incorporates continuous flowing movements, controlled breathing, and meditative awareness. Because it is a mind-body exercise, Tai Chi is often referred to as "meditation in motion" and is known for its mental and physical health benefits.

Tai Chi – also called T'ai Chi, Tai Chi Chuan, or Tai Ji Quan – originated in China in the 12th century as a system of exercise and self-defense.

What are the benefits of Tai Chi?

Tai Chi provides a variety of mental and physical benefits, including:

  • Improved balance and mobility
  • Increased flexibility
  • Less pain and stiffness
  • Improved sense of well-being
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Increased concentration and awareness

Tai Chi has also been proven to lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular fitness, relieve arthritis pain, and prevent falls.

What to wear for Tai Chi?

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing to practice Tai Chi. Choose clothes made from breathable fabrics to prevent overheating. Tai Chi involves many slow reaching and turning movements, so clothing that allows you to move freely is ideal.

Wear lightweight, flexible, thin-soled shoes or go barefoot. Avoid sneakers with thick soles or treads that may snag on the floor or restrict ankle flexibility.

Bring a reusable water bottle, especially if practicing outdoors.

How can I find Tai Chi classes near me?

When evaluating Tai Chi schools near you, follow these guidelines:

  • Compare membership packages from multiple schools.
  • Read school and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Visit the school to confirm it's clean and well-maintained.
  • Take advantage of a drop-in class to ensure the school and instructor are a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask Tai Chi instructors?

Ask these questions to ensure you find the best Tai Chi school for you:

  • How long have you been teaching Tai Chi?
  • What membership plans do you offer, and how much do they cost?
  • Do you offer a free or discounted trial class?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • Are your classes beginner-friendly?
  • Are your classes more wellness-oriented or martial arts-oriented?
  • How many people are in a typical class?
  • How long does each class last?
  • What should I wear to class?

Both my husband & I started Self Defense lessons with Coach Justin; from the moment I walked in I felt comfortable around him. In the first lesson I went home feeling so much better. He is able to fit in a ton of information in one hour. He teaches you real life situations. We're very pleased with everything he has offered us & has taught us. I wouldn't chose a different instructor even if I could. I can't wait to see how far both my husband & I can go. Thank you Coach Justin for teaching us & continuing to teach us.

My boys have been taking karate for three years with Ray Gomez. This is a fantastic school with a very family feel. Excellent technical training and Mr. Gomez is so great with the kids. We previously took classes at another Dallas area school that was good, but the instructors were largely college and high school kids. Mr. Gomez personally teaches all of the classes with black belts training underneath him assisting in class time. The times are very convenient for training after school and in the early evening. I cannot speak highly enough about the technical skill being taught. This is not a belt factory at all. There are very high expectations for all students. Along with the karate skills being taught Mr. Gomez really stresses honor, respect, and self control. We also love the family feel of the school. The students all get to know each other as do the parents. Mr. and Mrs. Gomez are there every single time we come to class. I cannot speak highly enough of Ray's and Mr. and Mrs. Gomez!
