About

I an a music educator of 23 years in public and private and have training and experience that extend beyond an ordinary piano studio. This background enables me to assist students in music theory and composition using DAW (digital audio workstations) as well as assist choral students become better sight readers and increase their level of music literacy. Since my private studio resides within a larger studio, students or their siblings may take voice or instrumental lessons at the same time or in a one hour block.

Given that I have worked in a school setting for so many years, I enjoy working one on one with my students and giving them the individual attention they need to learn and grow into successful musicians.

    Frequently asked questions

I do an assessment of students to see what they know and where they are as well as begin to ascertain their individual style of learning. Students who have previous knowledge of piano or come from another instructor will play for me and also bring their method books and music so that I can give a fair assessment as to where they are musically.

I have 23 years experience teaching in Public and private schools in the areas of general music, choral, and AP music theory. I founded a piano program (group and private lessons) at Fellowship Christian Academy and served as a piano instructor with the Arts Institute Program for 12 years at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship. In addition to teaching private lessons for several years, I am also hold a teaching certificate for All Level Music in the state of Texas.

Thirty minute lessons are $25 and hour lessons are $50. The studio I work in charges an annual registration fee of $25 and all lessons are paid in full at the first of each month.

I started teaching my friends for fun when I was in middle school. In college I started teaching to pick up some extra money. But when my church began an outreach ministry to train young musicuans in their Arts Institute program, I was asked to be a piano instructor and have been teaching piano in some capacity ever since.

I have worked with students from the age of 4 to senior adults. Here are the 5 types of students I generally work with:

    1. In general, most students view piano as a hobby or just something that is good to learn.

    2. Teenage students usually come on playing by ear and want to learn to read music but also for theory so that they can write their own music.

    3. Adults come in wanting to pick back up on previous knowledge or start a new hobby.

    4. Teachers send choir students in to take voice and piano to improve sight reading skills, pitch matching, and reading music independently.

    5. Churches send in young aspiring musicians to learn how to read and improvise using chord structure so that they can learn to play with their children”s choir or youth group.

My fondest events in teaching always surround when any student gets that “a-ha!” moment when struggling with a difficult concept and us able to move on to the next level of playing.

Always make sure that the teacher can adapt to your learning style. All students do not learn the same and a cookie cutter approach will most definitely stifle growth and the student’s ability to reach his or her full potential musically.

    1. Why am I choosing to take music lessons?

    2. What do I want to achieve with music lessons?

    3.  Am I committed to practicing and studying my music on my own at home?
