Ben Katzen Music Lessons
About
I teach cello in all styles, from classical and traditional music to jazz, rock, pop, blues and folk. I can help anyone from beginners to middle/high school students prepping for all-Region or All-State, to casual students of all ages who just want to have fun playing music! I also teach music theory and beginner-level violin, viola and bass.
I enjoy helping people unlock their passion of music. From my experience as a cellist playing with everyone from symphony orchestras to jazz combos to singer songwriters and blues bands, as well as over 10 years of teaching lessons, I enjoy being able to offer as diverse an array of options for the students that I teach. I always look to the student for cues on how hard to push them, and I can take a student anywhere they want to go.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My process for beginning lessons with a new student depends on a number of factors, including the age, experience, skill level and goals of the student. The first lesson, we typically spend time talking about the student and their musical interests, and use that conversation to formulate goals for our future lessons. With very young students I typically try to involve their parents in the process, so the student has sufficient support in learning how do be disciplined in home practice outside of the lessons.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been working as a professional musician for nearly 20 years, and have been teaching lessons full-time for 10 years. I have a bachelor’s degree in cello from the Peabody Conservatory in Music, am working towards my master’s in jazz studies from UNT, and am certified in the Suzuki Method through Cello Book 3. I have worked primarily as a celllist, having played for 23 years, but I also have 5 years experience of violin, and 8 years of piano, and am capable of teaching those instruments along with viola and bass.
