Kimberly K. says, "Kimberly Kennedy Flight Attendant "Before I began training with Ricky, I wasn't considered overweight. I had been working out most of my adult life, so I was fairly fit, but I couldn't say I was pleased with my body. I can't remember a time when I didn't believe I could stand to lose 5 or 10 more pounds. Most women between the age of 18-65 share that common theme. It appears to be permanently etched in our minds. I'm sure there are a lot of women who were like me, from size 2 thru 22 and beyond, who wished they could find a great pair of jeans that didn't include the proverbial "MUFFIN TOP." And though I read the same articles in over 15 different magazines in the last 15 years I still couldn't seem to "flatten my abs in two weeks", "lift my butt in 5 minutes a day" or get "lean thighs with 10 NEW moves" ( I dare you to look at a magazine cover right now). I tried diets, ab machines, and I even tried to get a "Smokin' Hot Body" in 90 days. Unfortunately none of those methods really worked or had any long term effect. I was left feeling defeated and unsatisfied. I needed something different. I remember, of all days, it was Thanksgiving, and a friend of mine who is very fit and looks like a model on a magazine cover, recommended I work out with Ricky. I was mildly skeptical. I wasn't really sure how working out with a trainer was going to be any different than everything else I tried, but since nothing else bought me the success I craved, I gave it a shot. WOW! I was blown away! Ricky was able to show me all the things I needed to do to get the lasting results of my dreams. Yes, I had to work at it but believe me, MEASURABLE CHANGE is a great motivator. It's even a lot of fun, especially when I try on jeans. No more "MUFFIN TOP"! The diet and fitness industry rakes in billions of dollars a year by playing on peoples emotions. They want you to believe that this NEW and IMPROVED way of working out is the one size fits all answer. Ricky taught me a realistic approach to health and fitness and he showed me what works. If you're a world class athlete looking for an edge, a parent, if you travel on business, if you if you are sick and tired of wasting time on the new fitness"FLAVOR OF THE MONTH" craze, or even if you have never worked out before, let Ricky show you how to reach your potential and meet your goals. He is well versed in the psychology and physiology of the body. He knows what it takes to STRENGTHEN, SHAPE and FUEL your body and he teaches you how it all works in harmony, one with the other. Of all of his many qualities Ricky has the UNPARALLELED ability to evaluate each client to specifically design a program that works to help you achieve YOUR individual goals. Ricky showed me how to incorporate fitness into my life. I no longer worry that I should lose 5 or 10 more pounds. I feel strong, confident, beautiful and pleased with my body. I think he's the BEST!" " Read more

Annie P. says, "Uriel is a great coach and he is extremely patient with you. After taking Muay Thai/Boxing lessons with him, my confidence has grown exponentially and I KNOW self-defense now. Being a small and petite person, I was nervous at first, but Uriel helped me overcome my shyness and made the experience extremely enjoyable. He isn't your average trainer and will break down the movements for you and has high expectations. I've also taken part of his weight training regimen, which has helped me achieve my goal of gaining more muscle mass. Whether it's for self-defense, losing weight, gaining muscle, regular cardio fitness, Uriel has the program for you! One of the best trainers I've come across in Houston and the surrounding area. Citlali T. says, "Nigel is an amazing group and personal trainer. I have been training with her in both settings for about two years now and am extremely happy with my results. She took the time to get to know my fitness goals and offered not only personalized workouts but also nutrition/meal plans specifically for me. I loved that she tweaked my workouts and meals over time as she got more familiar with how my body reacted to certain foods and I got stronger therefore needed more challenging workouts. As far as group classes, you will never leave one of her classes not feeling sore. Regardless of what fitness level you're at, Nigel will give you one heck of a workout every time. I really like that she mixes the workouts throughout the week to ensure you workout every muscle group and workouts are never the same and never boring. I highly recommend Nigel as a fitness trainer! Your boxing questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much are boxing classes?

Boxing classes cost $25 to $35 per group class or $75 to $200 per month on average. Total prices depend on the location, experience, and how often you meet. On top of the cost of lessons, you may need to buy the following equipment:

  • Wraps or gauze: $5 to $20
  • Boxing gloves: $20 to $80
  • Mouth guard: $10 to $20

What are the weight classes in boxing?

There are 17 different weight classes in boxing that help prevent injury and promote fair fights. Only people in the same weight class can box with each other. The lightest class is called Strawweight and is for people that weigh 105 to 107 pounds. The largest is Heavyweight and is for people over 200 pounds.

Are boxing classes worth it?

Boxing classes are worth it if you're looking for a good whole-body workout or want to learn self-defense. Boxing is easier to learn and inexpensive compared to many gym memberships or martial arts classes.

Boxing is not only a good cardio workout, it also works out the arms, legs, and core. This fighting style also releases tension in a safe environment while helping you reach fitness goals.

How many boxing classes should I attend per week?

Most people attend boxing classes 1 to 3 times per week, though this depends on your budget and schedule. For the best results, consider exercising at the gym or at home in between classes to build strength and endurance.

What should I wear to a boxing class?

Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and shoes to a boxing class. Most people wear shorts and a T-shirt or tank top. Remember to bring a water bottle and small towel to hydrate and remove sweat during the workout.

  • Read their reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Choose a gym that is licensed and experienced.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the classes begin.
  • Follow a payment schedule instead of making large payments up front.

After asking questions and verifying credentials, hire the best boxing instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask boxing instructors?

When looking for local boxing classes, ask these questions:

  • How long have you been teaching boxing classes?
  • Are you licensed and insured?
  • How many students do you have?
  • Are you experienced teaching beginners?
  • Do you have any current openings?
  • Are there any other people in my weight class here?
  • How often would you recommend meeting based on my experience level?
  • Can I have an estimate or contract in writing?

Uriel is one of the hardest working and knowledgeable coaches I know. On top of being an active fighter that can help you master any standing technique (boxing, kickboxing, and my favorite, Muay Thai) he has, and could do, any workout he puts you through. Uriel is a great motivator, and always brings the jokes along with the motivation. A great dude and a great teacher, check him out, for sure.

If you are looking to learn boxing (with proper techniques/form), improve your boxing, and also improve your fitness, I highly recommend working with Niles. He is not only experienced and professional but is also very patient and truly cares for his students. From working with Niles, my boxing has further improved, and I am able to catch the mistakes that I am making to improve on my boxing techniques. One of the things I love about working with Niles is when he provides the reason/"why" behind what we are working on. For example, he'll explain why a specific punch is added to end the combination because that is how you'll know whether you threw the 2nd to last punch correctly. He is also able to put the "theory" into practice by explaining what would happen in an actual fight. In summary, you'll learn a lot when working with Niles.
