Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will start with a questionnaire to see what the students knows and if there are any prior learning experience. The first meeting is typically a consultation on what they would like to see within their learning progress and what the student wants to use the lessons for. If there are no prior learning experience from the student basic exercises and beginning levels of theory will be the start. How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching through tutoring my peers during my undergrad, especially piano since it was required for all vocal student to learn how to play.
the beginning stages of my path to education started as a counselor at the Trotter Family YMCA. Which then contoured to lead to more job opportunities within the school systems.
What types of students have you worked with?
I typically work with beginner and intermediate level student that have little to no prior learning experience. The learning style of teaching is for classical voice and piano but this style can be used as a foundation to branch out to other genres.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
a recent event that I can remember is a time when one of my former students returned to my school (place of employment) after withdrawing to thank me for preparing her for the music elective she was taking at her new school. She said that my general music teaching gave her the upper hand on her new classmates when it came to reading music.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The student needs to be sure to have access to a piano or keyboard to practice (vocal piano and theory students)
The student needs to study and or practice daily if possible and have completed assignments due before the instructors next appointed practice.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How long does the student want their learning term to last?
Does the student wish to showcase their lessons through a possible recital?
How many times would the student wish to meet each week if not just once a week?
Does the student have a keyboard or piano in their home in order to practice during the instructors absence and if not how will the student go about practice the learned material?
