Piano study is traditional in approach, built on a foundation of music reading and proper keyboard technique. Lessons are tailored to the interests and goals of the student, ranging from those who anticipate a career in music to those who will enjoy music in their quality leisure time throughout their lives. Literature ranges from serious music from the Baroque to the 21st century, as well as sacred, pop, musical theater, and jazz.
Programs are held twice a year, in December and May, near the final week of the semester. These are casual gatherings for students and their families. Students perform music they select from their lesson materials, and memorization is not required. All families bring “finger food” for a reception after the program. These provide a social setting for parents and students to get to know one another and an opportunity to enjoy one another’s progress.
My studio does not participate in piano competitions, theory contests, or other competitive events. The vast majority of students will continue to play piano as a beloved leisure activity. I feel the stress of such competitions is unnecessary and unwanted. Those students who indicate a desire to major in music will be expected to memorize and study a higher level of music theory and history. The goal of every student should be to achieve their own best level: to become better than themselves, not to try to be better than others.
Piano lessons for all ages - whether you want to become a professional musician or just want a fun pastime - piano lessons are for you. Students must have a keyboard or piano to practice at home. No experience or music-reading ability needed - I will teach you! I enjoy teaching students from age 6 though adults, from beginners through advanced students.
Remember that music study is both physically and mentally challenging, but above all, music should always be enjoyed!
I look forward to many years of good times and good music together!
