Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
With a new student, I will spend a few minutes just talking with them and establishing a basic relationship.During our conversation, I will ask them why they play piano, and what kind of pieces they would like to play. Then, I will ask them to play a couple of pieces for me, and I will give some gentle feedback. Finally, I will play for them.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing piano for 19 years, and I have a degree in music education with an emphasis in piano. I have also worked in child care for 2 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I make an effort to make my lessons as affordable as possible. I charge $20 for a 30 minute lesson, and $30 for an hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching in high school because I wanted to start my own business, and I kept teaching because I love kids, and the effects teaching teaching had on me and my kiddos.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with students mostly from the ages of 4 to 10, but am eager to expand into older kids and even adults! I have worked with children from different backgrouds and tolerances to instruction, and our lessons have been fun and productive.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I tutir a four year old who had a significant breakthrough in reading. She was so proud of herself! We even got up and did a little dance in the classroom.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher who cares more about you as a person than how you do at a recital. Being a musician is hard, and you need to be TAUGHT to believe that you are more important than a wrong note.
It is also adventageous for you to have a teacher that teaches solid music theory, good consistent hand position, and helps you with fingerings.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do I trust this teacher?
Is this teacher going to understand my needs?
Has this teacher been effective in the past?
