Joseph Inman

About

I perfer at this point in my life of working with adults and teens, but have worked with young people for 40 years. I offer a range of learning from classical, jazz, pop and even some improvization. I do require basic technique work for without a strong finger, arm, muscle memory development, one cannot truly play musically as they are held back without this technique development which in my studio is: scales, arpeggios, and chords and inversions. Some exercises I've developed by my teachers from the past are used, also. I ask 1/4 of the time you practice to be used in technique development, the rest preparing pieces. I also work with HOW to practice as to make it EASY which is all practice means, TO MAKE EASY.

Music is my passion. I have degrees, BM< MM in piano and percussion as I loved both types of instuments and a piano IS a percussive instrument as it is struck by a hammer. My degrees are BM in performance from the U of Illinois; MM. from Catholic University. I also attented the Juilliard School In NY CITY for one semester. My goal is to help you as the performer ori student develop your own SOUND, as the sound is the end result. There is so much music of all types in this world, it is endless in choices. Understanding these styles is the intellectual part, then the musical part is taking this knowledge and applying it to HOW you produce the sound and the interpretation of the music chosen. I have had wonderful teachers in both worlds of piano and percussion, and use many of their techniques of teaching and of playing. Music feeds the soul and makes life a joy in both playing and listening. I have taught since 1970 privately and just recently stopped performing. I am an approved teacher by the National Music Teacher's Association for teaching. I have and still judge piano competition around the country. I was the winner of the 1967 piano competition in Siena, Italy for chamber music. I attended the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Mich. studying piano and percussion, and won in 1964 the concerto competition for percussion. I also performed for presidents, first ladies, etc. at the White House for events during my 21 years in the United States Army Band as well as the State Department, etc., performing mostly on piano at the White House. Piano study with Soulima Stravinsky; chamber music Leon Fleisher for one semester and Adele Marcus

Ideal instructor in so many way! Able to tailor lessons to my particular needs and tastes (mostly baroque) though he encourages me to push beyond my meager abilities. As an aging baby boomer myself, I am so happy to find someone who has allowed me to accomplish a lifelong dream: to play better than I did when I took lessons as a kid. Joe emphasizes good technique but still makes lessons fun. Definitely 5 stars!

Joe is patient and understanding of each students strengths. He focuses on technique, while helping students advance their playing. He offers constructive criticism without diminishing the students efforts and attempts at new material. He is an outstanding teacher.

    Joe:
You are a wonderful instructor, a wonderful friend; and after reading your profile I find you are an awarded musician.
I feel honored and privileged to have you as my teacher and as my friend.
This coming year I am going to try to be more dedicated to my practice each week.

Mr. Inman is an outstanding teacher. He drills you on technique for half the class before doing anything else. But its not overwhelming and technique is what made music so much easier for me to learn in the long run. He also makes the class fun, jokes around, and develops a long-lasting relationship with his students. We still keep in contact to this day. He should be everyones piano teacher, honestly.

I have been a piano student of Joe for over 10 years and have enjoyed every minute of it. He has the unique ability to work with kids and adults alike, fostering in each an understanding and love of music. Joe encourages his students to play different styles and genres of music to fit the students needs and desires. He has a unique way of making his students comfortable at any level of play. I find that while playing music I enjoy, I also learn a bit of theory and technique without it being dreary. I have seen him work with kids on their way to becoming concert pianists, and others who just enjoy music, and in each case he has adapted his style to meet their (and my) needs and desires. I have thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with Joe over the years and only wish that I had a teacher like him when I was young.
