About
Hi, I'm Phil. I have been a professional music teacher since 2002. In my time as a piano, guitar, drum and bass instructor I have taught hundreds of students to empower themselves through music.
I currently teach at Burbank Music Academy, Burbanks best music school three years running. I am the schools busiest teacher with a very high student retention rate. My students often study with me for five or more years.
My teaching style is based in traditional music theory. We don't bother with tabs or other crutches which limit a students knowledge of music. All students learn the fundamentals; ear training, notation, chords and scales. As a result my students become musicians first and instrumentalists second.
I can take people from absolute beginner to elite college level musician. The proof is in the success stories you will find on www.philromo.com/lessons/
If you or your child would like to study with a knowledgeable and experienced music teacher that has a reputation for RESULTS, please give me a call.
I love the empowerment music gives to people. Music can build confidence, intellect and the self-disciple to take on a variety of lifes challenges. I believe that studying music builds better, stronger and more durable people.
I get the pleasure of sharing an artform I love everyday with enthusiastic and motivated students. I love what I do and I am passionate about the mark that music makes on society. The world needs more of the beauty that music and musicians can provide.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We start by outlining goals and expectations. If the student agrees to put in daily consistent work, then we can expect to progress fairly well through the fundamentals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Studied music education at Cal State Fullerton and Fullerton Junior College. Many years of live, studio and touring experience. 15 years of teaching music professionally.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching friends of mine and eventually got a job in early childhood music classes. The little kids grew up and wanted to take piano and I started to teach professionally.
What types of students have you worked with?
All ages. I can teach students as young as four if they display the required attention and desire. I currently a gentleman in his 70's with many years of playing experience, we are learning music theory which is my specialty.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My student Madeleine played piano AND sang Bohemian Rhapsody for a recent piano recital. She SLAYED IT, it was so cool!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would ask them if they understand jazz harmony. If they look confused, flustered or start making excuses then move on. Your educator should know more than your average pop musician about music theory.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What is your experience? How far can you take me on this given instrument? What are your limitations? All these are important to know before you shell out money for lessons.
