About

Hi, I'm Phil. I have been a professional music teacher since 2002. In my time as a piano, guitar, drum and bass instructor I have taught hundreds of students to empower themselves through music.

I currently teach at Burbank Music Academy, Burbanks best music school three years running. I am the schools busiest teacher with a very high student retention rate. My students often study with me for five or more years.

My teaching style is based in traditional music theory. We don't bother with tabs or other crutches which limit a students knowledge of music. All students learn the fundamentals; ear training, notation, chords and scales. As a result my students become musicians first and instrumentalists second.

I can take people from absolute beginner to elite college level musician. The proof is in the success stories you will find on www.philromo.com/lessons/

If you or your child would like to study with a knowledgeable and experienced music teacher that has a reputation for RESULTS, please give me a call.

I love the empowerment music gives to people. Music can build confidence, intellect and the self-disciple to take on a variety of lifes challenges. I believe that studying music builds better, stronger and more durable people.

I get the pleasure of sharing an artform I love everyday with enthusiastic and motivated students. I love what I do and I am passionate about the mark that music makes on society. The world needs more of the beauty that music and musicians can provide.

My son took lessons from Phil beginning in grade school until the time he entered a music college program. Phil is a wonderful teacher, who knows how to inspire students. Phil helped my son develop the necessary skills, techniques, and understanding of music theory, so my son could pursue his dreams and goals of attending a music academy. Phil challenged my son, without ever being harsh or negative. Phil teaches with a beautiful balance of passion and patience. Phil is a clear communicator and listens to his students. He allows students to enjoy the process, while also helping them focus on the essentials necessary to be a competent musician. Im grateful that Phil was both an outstanding teacher and role model for my son.

I have been taking music lessons from Phil for the last two years which include piano, drums, guitar, and bass. Phil can absolutely do it all! Out of all the music teachers I have had in my life, Phil has definitely been the most influential. His passion for music and method of teaching really set him apart from the rest. If you want to learn music the right way, Phil is your man. He has helped bring the love of music back into my life. Thank you Phil for being a such a huge inspiration both inside and out of the music room.

Phil was fantastic. I was looking for someone who could help me with, not just learning the piano, but to be able to break down music pieces and understand how and why they work. The way I learn best is by asking every question on the topic of study that bothers or intrigues me, and he would always answer them patiently, and when he wasnt sure of the answer, he would say so, and get back to it the next class. Another thing I really liked was his interest in the different methods of learning. We had many interesting conversations regarding it, and if I was having difficulty learning something a certain way, I noticed that he would try to explain it in a different way, sometimes even allegorically. Loved his classes, and would totally recommend him for anyone whos looking to enrich their lives with music.

Phil taught both of my children guitar when they were young (13, 8). Besides being an excellent teacher, her was a fine role model regarding how an adult should act, and, now, 14 years later, they are still friends.

Phil is a fantastic music teacher! My husband and I are both musicians, so we are picky. Phil taught our son bass and coached his band, and was a wonderful influence not just musically, but on his life during his teenage years. He makes a great connection with his students and encourages them all the way. The best!

Frequently asked questions

We start by outlining goals and expectations. If the student agrees to put in daily consistent work, then we can expect to progress fairly well through the fundamentals.

All ages. I can teach students as young as four if they display the required attention and desire. I currently a gentleman in his 70's with many years of playing experience, we are learning music theory which is my specialty.

My student Madeleine played piano AND sang Bohemian Rhapsody for a recent piano recital. She SLAYED IT, it was so cool!

I would ask them if they understand jazz harmony. If they look confused, flustered or start making excuses then move on. Your educator should know more than your average pop musician about music theory.

What is your experience? How far can you take me on this given instrument? What are your limitations? All these are important to know before you shell out money for lessons.
