About

At Sound Before Sight Studios, we believe that individualized, ear-based learning is the fastest and most enjoyable way to learn piano. Within months, your student will be playing songs they love, not just by copying someone else on Youtube, but truly knowing what they are doing! Our lessons are engaging, affirming, and built around each student’s learning style and musical interests.

With our approach, you avoid the endless frustration with slow progress learning to read notes, unrelatable material, and only being able to mimic what someone shows them. Ultimately, you avoid wasted time, energy, and money as they lose interest on a method that doesn’t spark joy.

Here’s the transformation you can expect for your student:

✅ Confidently playing songs by ear—even in the first year

✅ Motivated to practice as they see real improvement

✅ Understanding what they’re playing—not just copying

✅ Comfortable performing for others—whether in the home or on stage

✅ A lifelong love of and appreciation for music

How it works:

1. Book a 15-Minute Discovery Call. Let's discuss your child's goals and how we can help.

2. Schedule Your Lessons. We'll work with you to decide on a regular weekly lesson time.

3. Join Our Community. Get announcements, tips, and encouragement in our online community.

4. See Your Child Thrive. Watch their confidence and skills grow as they master songs they love.

We believe music is best learned the way we learn language as a child—by listening, allowing our brains to connect the dots, and developing skills through exploration, repetition, and interaction.

Our primary focus, then, is to teach students to “hear” the melody, harmony, structure, and feel of music in such a way as to be able to reproduce and improvise on what they hear.

Reach out today to schedule a discovery call!

Sincerely,

Josiah Aston

    Frequently asked questions

After a discovery call to find out the student’s current skill level and goals, we start with a trial lesson. The slot is reserved if the student decides to continue lessons after the trial. Policies, a payment link, and a link to join our community app will be sent via email.

I have a degree in Music Education, as well as many years of training and experience in playing by ear.

Payments will handled through an automatic monthly subscription, which must be started by the day of the student's first lesson. 30-min individual lessons are $180/month. This fee includes other events and activities throughout the year as well.

People started asking me to teach lessons when I was still a teenager just getting into college. I then directed middle and high school music programs while teaching lessons on the side.

All types. I work best with students that have a hidden “ear” for music along with a desire and willingness to put the work in to develop that talent.

Look for a piano instructor that has a breadth of experience and ability. They should have a proven method that works, while also being flexible within that method to tailor the lessons for each individual student.

What are my goals? What do I want to accomplish in these lessons? What songs do I want to learn. What would bring the most fulfillment in my musical journey?
