Joel Cornell Guitar Lessons
About
My teaching approach:
It's important for you to actually be playing and working on the ideas while we're together in a lesson. I have a computer, stereo, and set of books in my apartment to use when appropriate. That being said, I want most of the time to be spent actually playing and showing the examples I'm teaching, because that's when I believe the information really sticks.
My influences are:
Growing up, Jimmy Page and Joe Satriani were the guitar influences, as well as pop and rock music in general. Over time, my interests have shifted and now my primary influences are George Lynch, John Petrucci, and Ty Tabor.
My guitar lessons take place in:
The teacher's studio

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:
I'll usually begin by asking a few questions, but most all information can be found by seeing how you handle the guitar itself. Once I know what you want to work on, if I can see where you are comfortable and where you are not, then I know what we'll need to work on and can cater lessons to your needs.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:
I believe in making your time count during our lessons. I'll often have prepared a set of topics and exercises I want us to go over, and will present them in a set way so you can gain the most during the 30 or 60 minutes we've set aside. Imagine time being split between explanations, examples, and then how to practice the ideas at home.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:
Someone who wants to learn and take their playing to the next level. Practice time is irrelevant - we all have obligations, and some people need to prioritize other parts of their lives ahead of guitar. What is important is that you want to learn and get better, no matter how much time you can dedicate.
