About

My goal as a music educator is to provide lessons that promote musicianship. I take pride in challanging my students to reach their higest musical potential. If that means the lesson goes over ten minutes I'm willing to make that sacrifice. As a music teacher for over 20 years and a professional musician for about 30 I bring a wealth of real world and classroom knowledge. Each student brings in a series of individual challanges so I'm always creating personalized musical exercises to help my student's personal needs.

What I enjoy about one on one lessons is how powerful the experience can be. Without that interaction students are left to be just another face in the bandroom. As a music teacher there's no better feeling then seeing a student progress and excel. Most importantly I liked to see the smile on the face of the student when they truly enjoy the experience of playing music.

    Frequently asked questions

First I assess the students prior knowledge by having them play a piece they know. If it's an older student who is start back up we simply have a conversation of where they stop playing. The first few lessons I spend most of the time figuring out strenghths and weaknesses. From there I gage what area or areas of music the student wants to focus on. May it be playing better in jazz band or band class or learning to play a favorite song or style.

I have two undergraduate degrees one in music performance and one in Music education. I also possess a Masters from the University of Minnesota in Music education. I have been teaching all the band instruments for over 12 years. Currently I've been at the same high school  teaching advanced guitar for 5 years music production for 5 and Mariachi for 3. At one point in time I was an active freelance producer in Chicago and Minneapolis. As a freelance musician I've played in a variety of settings including musicals, big band, orchestral setttings and just about every other music genre.

I started teaching private lessons when I was 19 at a music store. From there on I always taught private lessons mainly on band instruments. My first public school teaching job was at a K-12 school teaching band, choir, piano, and music technology. From there I've worked in a variety of school and private settings.

Every age and grade piano, voice and mainly band instrumental.

Recently my band and choir students had joint concert with the Monterey Pops Orchestra.

I'm very versatile when it comes to teaching instrumental music. I've been playing since I was 10 so I know what it feels like to be a young music student and what it's like to be advanced and everything in between. I'm a great motivator I'm really big on getting students to enjoy practicing. Playing band instruments for over 15 years I know all the tricks.

I encourage students to feel free to ask any question no matter how simple. More questions the better.
