What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I listen to them! Music and philosophy are about sythesizing and expressing invisible and complicated ideas to others so that their lives may be enriched.
Everyone has a something to say, everyone has a something to share, first and foremost I listen to determine what they have to share.
Then I work to develop music and a philosophy that they will need to express those ideas.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. in Philosophy from CSU East bay and graduated Cum Laude.
I have been playing the guitar for 13 years, taken private lessons for 10 years, and have been teaching for 4 years. I took Humanities and World Music, and I am an avid musical biography reader.

How did you get started teaching?
I met a friend who taught bass lessons online, and I became interested. I practiced with some friends and developed some interesting courses to take.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all ages, etnicities, and learning styles, I mostly work with teenagers, middle schoolers, and adults.
There are two types of student archetypes, the intuitive and the conciousentious. The intuitive students want to express their philosophical ideas, the conciousnetious want to learn philosophy ideas. Most people are a mix, but have a leanings towards one over the other.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I enjoy disucussing with students about the cogntion of music and the philosophy of music.
I get to show them how good our minds are at identifying and learning music.
I also get to learn how they view music. Some students think a "song" is only a song if it played on the radio!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
In philosophy there is a concept called natural kinds, things that are distinct and single in the universe.
You want a teacher that treats students as a manner of degree, not of a kind.
In philosophy and in music there are so many degrees and variety that to be a musician or a philosopher, one is always perceiving as a manner of degree rather than black and white.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Sometimes my teaching style doesn't reflect the typical factory style educatoin most people and myself are used to, I tend to be more post-modern.
Sometimes students think that they are not learning musical theory, but then they look in a musical theory book and they realize they do know music theory.
They were not used to learning in a style that wasn't stressful or difficult, so they didn't feel like they were "learning"!
