About

I teach aspiring guitar players how to master their favorite tunes. And/or I show them great tunes that thrill a room. I get my musicians ready to perform in front of people, ready to serenade a dear friend, ready to back up another singer, ready to play with other musicians. I teach singing as well, the art of singing while playing the guitar. I teach killer riffs, fills & solos.

I have an LA Music Center Teaching Artist's certificate, 2010. I have been recognized by the City of LA for teaching exgang kids blues writing and performing workshops.

I have fronted several bands that have performed in clubs and venues in San Francisco, Boston, NYC and LA.

I love giving people the technique to make guitar playing serious medicine for the soul. It cures so many ailments. It also builds confidence, discipline and enhanced self-esteem. I like showing my students keen to write their own material how to proceed in that direction.

In a word:Guitar Playing is a Secret Power.

This may sound dramatic but its true: Bennetts lessons changed my relationship to music and subsequently my life. He is an extraordinary guitarist and teacher with a gift for sharing his love of music. In my mid-40s, Id never played guitar and never let anyone hear me sing out loud. Bennett drew me out of my shell with his patience, sense of humor, phenomenal knowledge of music history, and jam-based approach to lessons. He taught me the basic chords to get me playing some of my favorite songs just a few sessions in, taught me to accept and recover from mistakes, even got me singing - loudly no less. Jamming with Bennett is so fun, freeing, confidence-building that Ive become more agile and brave in the rest of my life. Ive seen him teach people of all ages and levels. Hes a terrific teacher - dont hesitate for a minute.

Bennett Stein was an enthusiastic guitar teacher. My son looked forward to his lessons learning to play electric guitar mixed with singing. He taught him stage presence, taught challenging songs which built his confidence. I highly recommended him.

    Frequently asked questions

I start with basic 2 and 3-chord tunes for beginners. For intermediate players I get them playing their favorite tunes for which I draw up precise musical charts, and/or I prescribe the learning of thrilling Beatles, Stones, Bowie, Hendrix, Dylan or Radiohead tunes, etc.

I studied privately with NYC-based guitar instructors. My main guitar teacher mentor has a BFA in guitar from the Berklee School of Music in Boston.
