About

I guarantee results quickly. I majored in psychology at UCSB and I know neural hacks that will speed up learning. I will keep lessons fun but challenging. I am a very kind teacher and I personalize my lessons based on the student's wants and needs. I will provide direction and feedback which will allow you to grow as a musician. I have been teaching for over ten years and I have turned many amateurs into musicians, and many musicians into experts.

I took 2 music lessons with Jake, and I’ve decided to stop heres why:
Before we even started, there were already some concerns. I felt uneasy about going alone to a strangers house (since Im a woman), so I asked if I could bring my partner along. Jake’s hesitant response—Ive never done that before, but I guess its fine—made me question his professionalism/process. Considering that parents likely accompany their children to lessons, especially in strangers homes, I found this odd. In addition, the day before session #1, Jake was confused about the scheduled time, even though he set it.
Session #1: He asked if I had brought my amp, despite me clearly stating over the phone that I was a complete beginner and only had the small headphone amp. He assured me this wasn’t a problem, but then acted surprised when I showed up without one. He also asked me if he could vape during our sessions which I found to be unprofessional to even ask and because I was in his house I did not feel comfortable saying no. Before session #2 he calls me to let me know he does a special for lessons. If you buy 4 lessons you get $20 off. I was pretty frustrated as to why he had never even bothered to mention it before.
Session #2: Again he was surprised I had not bought an amp, although this was communicated. I was struggling to nail down the strum pattern and he asked if he could play my guitar to show me the pattern. Showing me the correct playing, I said I know that your playing sounds better and different but I cant tell what that difference is and what Im doing wrong. He responded by saying Its because no offense but you have a shitty guitar and I have a $4000 guitar. At this point, I decided not to continue but alas I got the pattern down. Excited I exclaimed I hope I get to play as good as you one day! to which he responded Youll never be as good as me. By the time you get to where I am Ill be way ahead of you because Ive been playing since I was 9.
TLDR: I would not recommend him because Jakes lack of professionalism, dismissive attitude, and rude comments are discouraging to new learners like myself.

Jacob is fantastic. He doesn’t just teach popular songs, he really delves into notes and chords. He also encourages your child to learn based on whether they want to do lead guitar or rhythm guitar. My daughter is a year in with about 2 to 3 lessons a month and she’s already in 7th chords

Frequently asked questions

I assess the students playing level and I work on improving their capabilities. For a beginner student I focus on what they do best and make that better so that they have something to show off. For intermediate to advanced students, I focus on what they are weak on and improve that so they become a more well-rounded player.

I received my bachelor's in psychology at UCSB and I use the knowledge I learned to make practicing more effective.
