Strings and Keys Music Studio specializes in fun, innovative, and research-driven multi-sensory transformational music education programming, offering weekly (or more!) lessons in piano, violin, and viola to students of all ages.
"SKMS" was founded in Lafayette, California in January 2000, by Lauralee, a professional freelance violinist, and a conservatory-trained pianist with a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy. Lauralee is also a parent of two “career musicians,” and an encouraging, patient, fun and enthusiastic teacher.
Our lessons are primarily taught online, with some in-person lessons for violin students, however being in-person is not guaranteed. Our current students who have been with us pre-pandemic, actually do not want to return to in-person lessons, as the benefits of the online format have outweighed those of coming in-person!
Our violin/viola lessons utilize curriculum from both the European classics as well as N and S American folk/fiddle/blues/jazz selections. The pedagogy stems from the Kato Havas New Approach, which emphasizes playing with freedom and preventing any physical injuries that stem from the incorrect use of our bodies!
Our piano and keyboard programs have students of ALL ages playing great-sounding classical, popular, blues, and accompaniment pieces immediately– from their very first lessons! In contrast to traditional learning, our breakthrough programs are tactile, experiential, and multi-sensory, with students being physically, visually, and aurally fully absorbed.
Lauralee's specializes in truly connecting with her students, walking a musical path beside them, rather than in front of them; engaging in musical dialog with them, rather than to them.
