Derrick Elliott Music Lessons
About
I am a professional bassist (electric and upright) and cellist in Los Angeles and have been for the past 5 years. I have toured around the country and performed internationally with well known grammy award winning/nominated artists (Steve Vai, Claudia Brant, Mayssa Karaa, Scott Page, etc.) as well as having toured with and opened for acts like Kenny Loggins, Air Supply, Dwight Yoakam, Whiskey Meyers, and many others. This experience is very valuble in terms of me being able to teach students in all different styles of music as well as teaching real world musician skills like how to improvise, understand theory, read sheet music, and many others. I am attaching my instagram below for examples of my playing.

I enjoy getting to help people's musical visions come true. Helping other people with their music, whether it is teaching, recording, or gigging, has always been a passion of mine.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First I like to get to know them a little bit so I can get a good guage of how they will most effectively learn. Then I like to figure out how what they want to and need to work on to meet their particular goals and go from there. I'll give them exercises to work on as well as music for listening to help develop important skills like ear training and theory.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Performance from Berklee College of Music as well as 5 years of pro experience as a working musician.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I generally do $40/hr and $20/30 min. Longer lessons I take off a bit for savingspurposes for the student.
How did you get started teaching?
Just through a friend of mine that knew someone that wanted bass lessons. The lessons I have done have all been through word of mouth.
What types of students have you worked with?
A couple college music students and a few beginners.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look at the real world experience of the teacher. People who have gigged and recoded professionally will have different insights from someone who only teaches.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Where do you want to do with music long term?
What do you feel like you want to work on, as well as what you need to work on?
What skills do you want to refine/acquire?
